Indonesia Visa: e-VOA, Visa-Free Rules & How to Apply

Most passports can apply online for Indonesia's electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) before flying. A shorter list, mostly ASEAN nationalities plus a few other countries, can enter completely visa-free for up to 30 days. Everyone else, including a handful of nationalities needing extra security clearance, must get a visa from an Indonesian embassy or consulate first.

  • e-Visa for 239 passports
  • Government fee from $28
  • Verified

Plusvisa is a private visa application service, not a government agency or embassy. Official government source: Official e-Visa website for Indonesia (evisa.imigrasi.go.id), evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Do you need a visa for Indonesia?

Which group a passport falls into depends on nationality, not on purpose of travel for short visits.

The three routes

  • e-Visa eligible

    239 passports

Apply online before flying for a single-entry, 30-day e-VOA. Covers most of Europe, the Americas, East Asia, the Gulf states, and many other countries, for tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing or transit.

  • Visa-free

    Visa-free entry (BVK)

A shorter list of nationalities, mostly from ASEAN, plus a few others such as Hong Kong, Macau, Turkiye, Brazil, Peru, Kazakhstan and Belarus, can enter Indonesia without any visa for up to 30 days, non-extendable.

  • Embassy visa only

    Embassy visa required

Passports not on the e-VOA or visa-free lists must apply at an Indonesian embassy or consulate first. A small group, including Afghanistan, Israel, North Korea, Liberia, Nigeria and Somalia, also needs extra security clearance.

How Indonesia visa fees work

  • Set by immigration, in rupiah. The Directorate General of Immigration sets every visa fee in Indonesian rupiah. Visa-free (BVK) entry has no government fee at all.

  • Card payments add a bank charge. Paying online by Mastercard, Visa or JCB adds a charge set by the card issuer or payment gateway, not by immigration. The published rate is not fixed and depends on the card used.

  • No refunds. Fees are not refunded if an application is refused, if an issued visa is never used, or if the traveller entered the wrong details on the form.

  • No official express fee. There is no paid fast-track option. An e-VOA is issued automatically once the payment and documents are checked, usually the same day.

What Plusvisa charges

The government fee is passed through at cost. Our service fee is on top, and every passport's page shows the total before you start.

If we make a mistake that leads to a refusal, we refund our fee and re-apply free.

Choose your port of arrival carefully

Arriving anywhere not on the official list means the e-VOA and visa-free facility do not apply, and a different visa is needed instead.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check if you need to apply

Confirm whether your passport can use the e-VOA, is visa-free, or needs an embassy visa. Check your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo, both under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready for payment.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the visa type, then enter your arrival details and residence address in Indonesia, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting the payment, or the application must be submitted again.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the visa from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Carry a copy on arrival

Keep a soft or hard copy of the visa with your passport. An immigration officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  2. 8

    Extend your stay if needed

To stay longer than the visa allows, apply for a residence permit extension at an Indonesian immigration office before it expires.

  3. 9

    Track your application

Check your application's progress at any time using the official tracking tool.

One thing to have before you fly

Every traveller needs this digital form in addition to their visa or visa-free entry.

  1. 1

    All Indonesia Arrival Card

A single digital form that replaced separate immigration, customs and health declarations. Every traveller, including children, submits it online within 3 days before arriving, then gets a QR code by email to show with their passport at the border. Official page (opens in a new tab)

The only official website, and how to check status

evisa.imigrasi.go.id, run by Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration, is the only official channel for e-Visas and the e-VOA. Other websites that charge a service fee to apply are private agencies, not the government.

Why Indonesia e-Visas get rejected

Almost every refusal is a file problem, not a judgement about you.

  • Passport not valid long enough

Less than 6 months of passport validity from the arrival date leads to a refused application or denied boarding.

  • Details do not match the passport

Any name, number or date entered on the application that does not exactly match the passport makes the visa invalid, with no refund.

  • Wrong document format

A biodata page or photo that is not JPG, JPEG or PNG, or is over the 200 KB size limit, is rejected by the system.

  • Ineligible travel document

Stateless people and holders of non-national travel documents, such as a laissez-passer or emergency passport, cannot get an e-VOA.

  • Payment not completed in time

If payment is not finished within 120 minutes of starting, the application must be submitted again.

  • Officer discretion at entry

Even with a valid e-VOA or visa-free entry, an immigration officer can still refuse entry at the border without giving a reason, for example if there is no onward ticket.

Sockets and power in Indonesia

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Indonesia uses type C and F sockets. If your own plugs are a different type, one type C adapter covers the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works here with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: a type C adapter unless your own plugs already match, and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Indonesia drives on the left

Traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

$1 ≈ Rp16,260.2 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.

Questions everyone asks about Indonesia visas

It depends on your passport. Many nationalities can apply online for an e-VOA, some can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, and others must get a visa from an embassy or consulate before travelling.

The e-VOA allows a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days from the date you arrive. It cannot be extended beyond that without switching to a different permit.

e-VOA and visa-free stays cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, you need to apply for a residence permit or a different visa at an immigration office before your current stay expires.

It is a mandatory digital form that combines immigration, customs and health declarations. Every traveller submits it online within 3 days before arrival and receives a QR code by email to show at the border.

Only a set list of international airports, seaports and land border crossings accept the e-VOA and visa-free entry. Check the official list before you travel, since arriving elsewhere means it will not apply.

Yes. evisa.imigrasi.go.id, run by the Directorate General of Immigration, is the only official application channel. Other websites that charge extra fees are private services, not the government.

Overstaying brings a daily fine, and an overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel to Indonesia.

Now read the one written for your passport

Each guide has the fee for that passport, its maximum stay, the rules that apply only to it, and the application itself.
