The 60-day rule, and what it does not mean

An Australian e-VOA allows one entry and a stay of up to 30 days from your arrival date. It does not accumulate across visits.

Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

42 of 60 days

1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA: Single entry, up to 30 days from arrival. Your arrival date must match the date on your application.

  • Extensions: The e-VOA cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before your stay ends.

  • Overstaying: Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel.

  • Entry points: The e-VOA only works at named airports, seaports and land crossings on the official list. Arriving elsewhere means a different visa is needed.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as an Australian applicant.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

Needs 3D Secure and international transactions enabled. It does not need to be in your name.

Printed or digital copy. An immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival.

  • All Indonesia Arrival Card

Submit online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code emailed to you with your passport at the border. Required for every traveller, including children.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Do you hold an Australian passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?

  2. Will you enter and leave Indonesia by one of the listed airports, seaports or land crossings?

  3. Is your trip 30 days or less, with one entry?

  4. Do you hold a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your route

Confirm that your Australian passport qualifies for the e-VOA. Check that it is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

Australia's status is not yet confirmed on this official page.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo. Both must be JPG, JPEG or PNG and under 200 KB. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website. Activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in and choose the visa type. Enter your arrival details and residence address in Indonesia. Upload your documents.

Names and numbers must match your passport exactly.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting payment. If the time runs out, submit the application again.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit your arrival card

Submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code with your passport at the border.

  2. 8

Carry a copy of your visa

Keep a soft or hard copy of the e-VOA with your passport. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  3. 9

    Track or extend

Track your application on the official tool. To stay longer than 30 days, apply for a residence permit at an immigration office before your stay ends.

Questions Australian travellers actually ask

Not for a typical trip. Australian passport holders need an e-VOA before travel. Visa-free entry is only for a shorter list of countries, mostly ASEAN members.

Up to 30 days from arrival, single entry. The destination guide says it cannot be extended. For a longer stay, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before your stay ends.

Up to 14 days before arrival. The government advises finishing at least 48 hours before departure.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Less than this can lead to refusal or denied boarding.

A digital form you submit online within 3 days before arrival. It replaces separate immigration, customs and health declarations. You show the QR code emailed to you at the border.

You need a return or onward ticket. An immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival, and may refuse entry without one.

Only Mastercard, Visa or JCB cards are accepted. The card needs 3D Secure and international transactions enabled. The card does not need to be in your name. Your bank may add its own charge.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Australian plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Indonesia uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type I. An I-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Australia — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: one type C adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Indonesia drives on the left — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — same as Australia

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

$1 ≈ Rp10,731.7 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
