The 60-day rule, and what it does not mean

An Indian citizen on the e-VOA may stay up to 30 days from the arrival date, on a single entry. The 30 days do not add up across trips.

Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

42 of 60 days

1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA stay: The e-VOA allows one entry and a stay of up to 30 days from the day you arrive. It is issued for the arrival date you enter.

  • No extension on the e-VOA: The e-VOA cannot simply be extended beyond 30 days. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before your stay ends.

  • Overstays: Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel to Indonesia.

  • Entry points: The e-VOA works only through the listed airports, seaports and land crossings. Arriving at any other point means a different visa is needed.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as an Indian applicant.

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page. JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB. Passport valid 6 months from arrival.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo. JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

3D Secure enabled and open to international payments. Does not need to be in your name.

  • Return or onward ticket

Printed or digital copy of a ticket out of Indonesia. An officer can ask to see it on arrival.

  • All Indonesia Arrival Card QR code

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Do you hold a regular Indian passport, not an emergency or temporary passport or a travel document?

  2. Is your passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?

  3. Will you enter through a listed Indonesian airport, seaport or land crossing?

  4. Is your trip 30 days or less, for tourism, business meetings or a visit?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check you can use the e-VOA

Confirm that Indian citizens can use the e-VOA and that your trip is 30 days or less. Check your passport is valid for at least 6 months from arrival.

  2. 2

    Prepare your files

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo. Both must be JPG, JPEG or PNG and under 200 KB. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the e-VOA, enter your arrival details and address in Indonesia, and upload your files. Check every name, number and date against your passport.

Any mismatch makes the visa invalid, with no refund.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting payment, or submit the application again. Your card issuer may add a charge.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit the arrival card

Submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Show its QR code with your passport at the border.

  2. 8

    Carry copies

Keep a copy of the e-VOA with your passport and return ticket. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  3. 9

    Track your application

Check the status of your application at any time using the official tracking tool.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Indian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as India — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — same as India

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

₹1 ≈ Rp195.1 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
