An e-VOA gives a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days from arrival. The stay is not extended and does not add up across visits.
Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.
Arrive 1 March
42 of 60 days
1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.
e-VOA stay: Single entry, up to 30 days from the date you arrive. Enter only through a named airport, seaport or land crossing on the official list.
No extension on the e-VOA: The destination guide says the e-VOA cannot be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or another visa at an immigration office before the stay ends.
Stays do not add up: Each entry gives a new 30-day stay. Repeat visits do not combine into one longer stay.
Overstays: Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel.

The portal accepts applications up to 14 days before arrival and the government advises finishing at least 48 hours before departure. Same window as the destination guide; Japan does not differ.
Do you hold a Japanese national passport, not a travel document such as a laissez-passer or emergency passport?
Is your passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?
Will you enter and leave through a named airport, seaport or land crossing on the official list?
Is your planned stay 30 days or less?

Answer all four
Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.
Before you apply
Check your route
Confirm that a Japanese passport can use the e-VOA and that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
Prepare your files
Scan the passport biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo. Both must be JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready.
On the official portal
Register an account
Create an account on the official e-Visa website and activate it from the verification email within one hour.
Complete the application
Sign in, choose the visa type, enter your arrival details and residence address in Indonesia, and upload your documents.
Pay the fee
Pay by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting payment, or the application must be submitted again.
Card charges are set by your card issuer or payment gateway, not by immigration.
Download the visa
Once approved, download the visa from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.
After you apply
Submit the arrival card
Submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code with your passport at the border.
Carry a copy
Keep a soft or hard copy of the visa with your passport. An immigration officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.
Track your application
Check progress at any time with the official tracking tool.

Yes. Japan is on Indonesia's list of 97 countries whose citizens can apply for the e-VOA. A February 2025 VFS Global release names Japan on that list. I could not open the official list while preparing this guide, so check the official e-Visa portal before you fly.
Up to 30 days from arrival, for a single entry. The e-VOA cannot be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or another visa at an immigration office before your stay ends.
The official portal accepts applications up to 14 days before arrival. The government advises finishing at least 48 hours before you leave. Applying about 7 days ahead leaves room to fix any upload problems.
For a typical tourist trip, no. The e-VOA is applied for online before you fly. Only passports that are not on the e-VOA or visa-free lists must apply at an embassy first.
The official portal accepts Mastercard, Visa and JCB cards. The card must have 3D Secure enabled and be open to international transactions. The card does not need to be in your name. Card charges are set by the card issuer, not by immigration.
Yes. Every traveller, including children, submits it online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code sent by email with your passport at the border.
The e-VOA only works through named airports, seaports and land crossings. If you arrive at another point, the e-VOA does not apply and you need a different visa.
Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel to Indonesia.

Type C
Indonesia uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type A and B. An A-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.
Voltage
230 V · 50 Hz
Against 100 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.
Pack: one type C adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Getting around
Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.
Health
Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.
Customs and etiquette
Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.
Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).
¥1 ≈ Rp107.3 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old
Carry cash outside big cities
Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.
Use ATMs for local currency
ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.
Exchange only at licensed counters
Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.

Sweet spot: Jakarta has a tropical climate with high heat and humidity year-round. The wet season runs from around November to March, with the heaviest rain and flood risk in January and February. June to September is the driest, sunniest stretch, and May marks the start of the dry season.
