The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

The e-VOA lets a Swedish citizen stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days from arrival, on a single entry. It cannot be extended into a longer stay on its own.

E-Visa On Arrival: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • One stay, one entry: The e-VOA covers one trip. Leaving and re-entering Indonesia needs a fresh e-VOA, not a second use of the same one.

  • No extension on the e-VOA itself: The 30 days cannot simply be extended. Staying longer means applying for a residence permit or a different visa at an Indonesian immigration office before the e-VOA expires.

  • Overstaying has consequences: Overstaying brings a daily fine. Overstaying more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on returning to Indonesia.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a Swedish applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB. Swedish passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

A Swedish-issued Mastercard, Visa or JCB card works if it has 3D Secure enabled and allows international payments. It does not need to be in the applicant's own name.

  • Return or onward ticket

A printed or digital copy of a return or connecting ticket out of Indonesia; an immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival.

When should you apply?

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on a full Swedish national passport, not an emergency or temporary travel document?

  2. Is your passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date?

  3. Will your trip last 30 days or less, with a single entry into Indonesia?

  4. Do you have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure for online payment?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

Confirm your Swedish passport is valid for at least 6 months from arrival, and that the e-VOA suits your trip.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo, both under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure ready.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the e-VOA, then enter your arrival details and Indonesian address, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay with your Mastercard, Visa or JCB card within 120 minutes of starting, or the application must be submitted again.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit the arrival card

Within 3 days before arrival, submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online and keep the QR code it emails you.

  2. 8

    Carry a copy on arrival

Keep a soft or hard copy of the e-VOA with your passport. An immigration officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

Questions Swedish travellers actually ask

No. The e-VOA must be applied for and paid online before you fly. There is no walk-up visa counter for it at the airport.

Yes. Bali uses the same e-VOA rules as the rest of Indonesia. Apply online before flying and arrive through an accepted airport or seaport such as Ngurah Rai.

Yes, if it is a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled and open to international payments. The card does not need to be in your own name.

Yes, the e-VOA covers business meetings and government visits as well as tourism, as long as the trip is 30 days or less on a single entry.

Renew it first. An application is refused, or boarding can be denied, if the passport is valid for less than 6 months from the arrival date.

No, it is single-entry. If you plan more than one entry on the same trip, you need a different visa before you travel.

Yes. Every traveller, including e-VOA holders, must also submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival and show the QR code it emails you.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Swedish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Sweden — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of Sweden

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
