The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

The e-VOA gives a single entry and a stay of up to 30 days from the date you arrive. It cannot be extended online, so plan to leave or switch to another permit before day 30.

E-Visa On Arrival: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days is the limit: Your e-VOA stay is fixed at 30 days from arrival. There is no online option to extend it further.

  • Single entry only: The e-VOA covers one entry. Leaving Indonesia and returning needs a fresh application, each still limited to 30 days.

  • Extend at an immigration office: To stay past 30 days, apply for a residence permit or a different visa at an Indonesian immigration office before your e-VOA expires.

  • Overstaying is expensive: Overstaying brings a daily fine. Staying more than 60 days over can lead to detention, deportation or a travel ban.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a UK applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of your UK passport's biodata page, JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent digital photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. No separate background or size rule is published beyond this file limit.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

A UK-issued card works if it has 3D Secure enabled and is open to international payments. Your bank may add its own foreign transaction charge since the fee is billed in rupiah.

  • Return or onward ticket

Keep a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket. An immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival, even with a valid e-VOA.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 2–4 weeks. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip tourism, a business meeting, a government visit, goods purchasing or transit, of 30 days or less?

  2. Will your UK passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive?

  3. Do you have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled for international payments?

  4. Will you arrive through one of the named airports, seaports or land crossings that accept the e-VOA?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check your passport and trip purpose

Confirm your UK passport has at least 6 months of validity left from your arrival date, and that your trip matches an e-VOA purpose.

  2. 2

    Prepare your files and card

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a digital photo, both under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. Have a UK Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready with 3D Secure enabled.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the email link within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, select the visitor visa, then enter your UK passport details, arrival information and address in Indonesia.

  3. 5

    Pay by card

Pay online with your Mastercard, Visa or JCB card within 120 minutes of starting, or you must submit the application again.

  4. 6

    Download your e-VOA

Once approved, download the visa from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

Carry a copy and your return ticket

Keep a soft or hard copy of the e-VOA with your passport and your return or onward ticket. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  2. 8

    Submit the arrival card

Complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before landing and keep the QR code for the border.

  3. 9

Extend only through an immigration office

To stay past 30 days, apply for a residence permit or new visa at an Indonesian immigration office before your e-VOA expires.

Questions UK travellers actually ask

Yes. The United Kingdom is on the official e-VOA list, so most UK passport holders can apply online instead of visiting an embassy.

No. For tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing or transit of 30 days or less, the online e-VOA is enough. An embassy visa is only needed for other purposes or longer stays.

Only Mastercard, Visa or JCB credit cards are accepted, with 3D Secure enabled and open to international transactions. Check with your card issuer before applying.

The visa fee is set in Indonesian rupiah. Your UK bank or card issuer may add its own foreign transaction charge, separate from the government fee.

You can apply from 14 days before travel. Indonesia advises applying at least 48 hours before departure, so approval is confirmed in time.

Transit is a permitted purpose, but check that you will not leave the international transit area, since that changes the rules.

A blurred or oversized scan is rejected by the online system. Rescan the biodata page in colour, under 200 KB, in JPG, JPEG or PNG format.

No. The e-VOA cannot be extended. You need to apply for a residence permit or a different visa at an immigration office before it expires.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your UK plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Indonesia uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type G. A G-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as the United Kingdom — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: one type C adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Indonesia drives on the left — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — same as United Kingdom

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

£1 ≈ Rp20,650.4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
