The 60-day rule, and what it does not mean

Italian citizens may stay up to 30 days per entry on the e-VOA. The stay is single entry and does not add up across visits.

Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

42 of 60 days

1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA stay: 30 days from the date you arrive. The date must match your application. Each visit is counted on its own.

  • Extending the stay: The e-VOA cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit at an immigration office before it ends. Italian notes mention one 30-day renewal; this conflicts with the destination rules and is flagged for review.

  • Journalists and other purposes: The e-VOA covers tourism, business meetings, official visits, goods purchasing and transit. Journalism is not on that list. Italian travel notes say journalists must register with Indonesia's Foreign Ministry in Jakarta first.

  • Overstaying: Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a travel ban.

Your document checklist

Seven things to have ready before you start your application, as an Italian applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page. JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB. Passport valid 6 months after arrival.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo. JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB.

  • Undamaged passport

Italian travel notes say the passport must be in good condition, with no tears, cuts, loose pages or damage to the photo or barcode.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

Needs 3D Secure and international use. Does not need to be in your name. Paid online only.

  • Return or onward ticket

Printed or digital copy. Italian travel notes and the destination rules say an officer can ask for it at the border.

  • All Indonesia Arrival Card

Submit online at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code by email with your passport.

Only for some visa types

  • Bali arrival levy (if flying to Bali)

Only if Arrivals in Bali only. Italian travel notes say a visitor levy applies to non-residents arriving in Bali. Check the official Bali site for payment before you fly.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?

  2. Do you hold a standard Italian passport, not a temporary passport?

  3. Is your trip for tourism, business meetings, official visits or transit, and 30 days or less?

  4. Will you enter and leave through a named airport, seaport or land crossing?

Result

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after arrival and is undamaged. Count blank pages too (see notes).

Italian travel notes list at least 2 blank pages; the destination guide sets no number.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo. Both must be JPG, JPEG or PNG and under 200 KB. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website. Activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the e-VOA, enter your arrival details and Indonesian address, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting payment. If the time runs out, submit the application again.

Payment is online only, per the destination guide.

  4. 6

    Download the e-VOA

Once approved, download the visa from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit the Arrival Card

Within 3 days before arrival, submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online. Keep the QR code for the border.

  2. 8

    Carry a copy on arrival

Carry a copy of the e-VOA with your passport. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  3. 9

    Track your application

Check the status of your application with the official tracking tool.

Questions Italian travellers actually ask

Yes. Apply at evisa.imigrasi.go.id, the official Indonesian e-Visa website, before you travel. You can apply from 14 days before arrival, and the government advises finishing at least 48 hours before departure.

No. Indonesia's rules say there is no separate counter for a visa on arrival. Apply online before you travel. Italian government travel notes mention a payment at the airport. That point conflicts with the destination rules and is flagged for review. Check with the Italian embassy in Jakarta before you fly.

The e-VOA cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or other permit at an immigration office before the stay ends. Italian travel notes mention one 30-day renewal. That point conflicts with the destination rules and is flagged for review. Do not plan on it. Confirm with immigration first.

The destination rules set no blank-page number. Italian government travel notes list at least two blank pages. Check your passport before you fly.

No. Italian government travel notes say temporary passport holders cannot get an e-VOA. They must apply for a visa through the Indonesian embassy before travelling.

Yes. Every traveller, including children, submits the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code with your passport at the border.

Only the named international airports, seaports and land crossings on the official list accept the e-VOA. Arriving elsewhere means the e-VOA does not apply. Check the official list before you travel.

Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel to Indonesia.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Italian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Italy — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of Italy

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

€1 ≈ Rp17,561 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
