Apply online before flying for a single-entry, 30-day visa covering tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing or transit. The United States is on Indonesia's e-VOA list.

  • Longer or multi-entry trips

    Regular visa at an embassy

If you need more than 30 days, multiple entries, or a purpose the e-VOA doesn't cover, apply at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in the US before you travel.

The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

Most US citizens enter on the e-VOA, which allows one stay of up to 30 days from your arrival date. It cannot be stretched by leaving and re-entering on the same visa, and it doesn't carry a right to work or study.

E-Visa On Arrival: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA: 30 days, once: A single entry and a stay of up to 30 days counted from the day you land. You must leave, or switch to another permit, before it runs out.

  • No online extension: You can't extend an e-VOA from home or through the portal. To stay longer, visit an Indonesian immigration office in person for a residence permit before your 30 days end.

  • Need more than 30 days or one entry? Apply for a different visa at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in the US before you fly if your trip already needs more time or more than one entry.

  • Overstaying: Staying past your 30 days brings a daily fine. More than 60 days over can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on returning to Indonesia.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a US applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan of your passport book's biodata page, JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. Valid at least 6 months from arrival. A US passport card is not accepted.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent passport-size photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB.

  • Visa, Mastercard or JCB card

A US-issued card works if it has 3-D Secure enabled and allows international transactions. Only these three networks are accepted; US Amex cards won't work.

  • Return or onward ticket

A copy of your ticket out of Indonesia. Not uploaded with the application, but an immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 2–4 weeks. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

You can apply up to 14 days before flying, but immigration advises at least 48 hours before departure. Apply about a week out to leave time to fix a rejected photo or a declined card.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Will your passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you land in Indonesia?

  2. Are you travelling only for tourism, a business meeting, a government visit, goods purchasing or transit?

  3. Is your trip 30 days or less, with just one entry into Indonesia?

  4. Are you holding a standard US passport book, not a passport card or emergency travel document?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check the e-VOA covers your trip

The US is on Indonesia's e-VOA list for tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing and transit. Confirm your passport is valid for at least 6 months after you land.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents and card

Scan your passport biodata page and a passport photo, both under 200 KB. Have a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card ready with 3-D Secure and international payments turned on.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register on the official portal

Create an account at evisa.imigrasi.go.id and activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the visitor visa, then enter your arrival details, your Indonesia address, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay within 120 minutes

Pay by Visa, Mastercard or JCB. If your US card is declined, check that 3-D Secure and international transactions are switched on, then reapply.

  4. 6

    Download your e-VOA

Once approved, download it from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit the arrival card

Within 3 days of landing, complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card online and keep the QR code with your passport.

  2. 8

Carry a copy and your return ticket

Keep a copy of your e-VOA and your return or onward ticket. An officer can ask for either at the border.

  3. 9

Extend before it expires, if needed

To stay past 30 days, go to an Indonesian immigration office in person for a residence permit before your e-VOA expires.

Questions US travellers actually ask

Yes. The United States is on Indonesia's e-VOA list, so most Americans travelling for tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing or transit can apply online before flying.

No. A passport card is not valid for international air travel, including to Indonesia. You need your regular US passport book.

Indonesia's official document list asks only for a scan of your biodata page and 6 months of validity from your arrival date. It does not list a blank-page requirement.

Yes, if it's a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card with 3-D Secure enabled and open for international transactions. The card doesn't have to be in your name. Other cards, including American Express, are not listed as accepted.

Payment must finish within 120 minutes of starting or the application has to be submitted again. Check with your bank that international and 3-D Secure payments are switched on before you retry.

Yes, in practice. It isn't uploaded with the application, but an immigration officer can ask to see a return or onward ticket out of Indonesia on arrival.

No. An e-VOA can't be extended online or in person. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit at an immigration office before it expires.

No. The visa-free list is mostly ASEAN countries plus a short list of others. US citizens are not on it, so a visa, usually the e-VOA, is needed.

No. It only covers tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing and transit. Ask an Indonesian embassy or consulate about options for a longer or working stay.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your US plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Indonesia uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type A and B. A A-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 120 V · 60 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type C adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of United States

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

$1 ≈ Rp16,260.2 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
