The 60-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Spanish citizen with an e-VOA may stay up to 30 days from the arrival date on a single entry. The 30 days do not add up across visits.

Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

42 of 60 days

1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA stay: 30 days from the arrival date, single entry. The e-VOA is tied to the arrival date you enter on the form.

  • No simple extension: The e-VOA cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before the 30 days end.

  • Visits do not add up: Each entry starts a new 30 days. Leaving and re-entering does not extend the first stay.

  • Overstays: Overstaying brings a daily fine. Stays over 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future entry. The Spanish foreign ministry adds that an overstay over 3 months can bring criminal penalties.

  • Working on a tourist stay: The Spanish foreign ministry warns that working on a tourist visa has serious consequences. Work needs a different permit.

Your document checklist

Seven things to have ready before you start your application, as a Spanish applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the biodata page. JPG, JPEG or PNG, max 200 KB. Passport valid 6 months from arrival.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo. JPG, JPEG or PNG, max 200 KB.

  • Passport in good condition

No detached covers. At least one blank page per entry. Spanish ministry says damaged passports are refused.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

3D Secure enabled and open to international transactions. The card need not be in your name.

  • Return or onward ticket

Printed or digital copy. An immigration officer can ask for it on arrival.

  • All Indonesia Arrival Card

Submit online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code with your passport at the border.

Only for some visa types

  • Travel medical insurance

Only if Recommended, not required for entry. Spanish ministry advises medical cover that includes medical evacuation. Check the minimum amount on the ministry page.

  4. Will you arrive by an airport, seaport or land crossing on the official list?

Questions Spanish travellers actually ask

No. Spain is not on Indonesia's visa-free list. The Spanish foreign ministry says visa exemptions are suspended for Spanish citizens. Apply for an e-VOA online before you fly.

Not for the e-VOA. Apply online at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The embassy in Madrid is at Calle Agastia 65, 28043 Madrid, tel +34 91 413 02 94, if your trip falls outside the e-VOA.

The official portal accepts Mastercard, Visa and JCB cards with 3D Secure. The card does not need to be in your name. Check with your bank that it allows international payments.

No. The destination guide says there is no cash visa-on-arrival counter. Apply online before you travel.

No. The e-VOA cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before your 30 days end.

Only if you have been in Africa or South America in the 6 months before arrival. The Spanish foreign ministry lists yellow fever as mandatory in those cases.

It is not an entry rule. The Spanish foreign ministry strongly recommends medical cover that includes medical evacuation. Check the minimum amount on the ministry page.

The Spanish foreign ministry advises at least one blank page for each entry. The destination guide sets no blank-page rule.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Spanish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Spain — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of Spain

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

€1 ≈ Rp17,561 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
