The 60-day rule, and what it does not mean

On the e-VOA, a Chinese citizen may stay up to 30 days from the arrival date, on a single entry. The stay cannot be extended on this permit. The limit does not add up across trips.

Business trip E-visa: 60 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

42 of 60 days

1 Mar – 11 Apr: 42 of the 60 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-VOA stay: Up to 30 days from the date you arrive. Single entry only. Enter by a listed airport, seaport or land crossing.

  • Staying longer: To stay beyond 30 days, apply for a residence permit or other visa at an immigration office before the current stay expires.

  • Not a cumulative limit: The 30 days do not add up across several trips. Each entry gets its own stay.

  • Overstaying: Overstaying brings a daily fine. An overstay of more than 60 days can lead to detention, deportation or a ban on future travel to Indonesia.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as a Chinese applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page. JPG, JPEG or PNG, max 200 KB. Passport valid 6 months from arrival.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo. JPG, JPEG or PNG, max 200 KB.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

Needs 3D Secure and international use. Does not need to be in your name. The portal lists these three networks only; UnionPay is not on the list.

  • Return or onward ticket

Printed or digital copy. An officer can ask to see it on arrival.

  • All Indonesia Arrival Card

Submit online within 3 days before arrival. Show the QR code with your passport at the border. Required for every traveller.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Do you hold a national Chinese passport that is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date?

  2. Is your trip for 30 days or less, with a single entry?

  3. Will you enter through a listed airport, seaport or land crossing?

  4. Do you have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check you need the e-VOA

Confirm your passport is eligible for the e-VOA and that it is valid 6 months from your arrival date.

Official page could not be read during drafting.

  2. 2

    Prepare your files

Scan your passport biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo. Both must be JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. Have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website. Activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the visa type, enter your arrival details and your residence address in Indonesia, and upload your files.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay by Mastercard, Visa or JCB within 120 minutes of starting payment. If the time runs out, submit the application again.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Submit your arrival card

Submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. Show its QR code with your passport at the border.

  2. 8

Carry a copy of the visa

Keep a copy of the e-VOA with your passport. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  3. 9

    Track or extend

Track your application on the official tool. To stay longer than 30 days, apply for a residence permit at an immigration office before the stay ends.

Questions Chinese travellers actually ask

Yes. Most Chinese citizens apply for the e-VOA online before flying. It is single entry for up to 30 days.

Up to 30 days from the date you arrive, on a single entry. It cannot be extended on this permit. For a longer stay, apply for a residence permit at an immigration office before your stay ends.

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. A shorter validity can lead to a refused application or denied boarding.

The official portal accepts Mastercard, Visa and JCB only. UnionPay is not on the list. Use a card from one of these networks with 3D Secure enabled.

Only named international airports, seaports and land crossings on the official list. Arriving at any other checkpoint means the e-VOA does not apply. Check the official list before you book.

The portal accepts applications up to 14 days before travel. The government advises finishing at least 48 hours before departure. Applying about a week ahead leaves room to fix any upload problem.

A digital form for immigration, customs and health. Submit it online within 3 days before arrival. You need it even with an e-VOA.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Chinese plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 220 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of China

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

¥1 ≈ Rp2,276.4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
