  • Most travellers

    e-VOA

Canadian passport holders apply online for a single-entry e-VOA before flying. It covers tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing and transit, for a stay of up to 30 days.

  • Longer or multiple-entry trips

    Regular visa

If you need more than 30 days, multiple entries, or a purpose the e-VOA does not cover, apply at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in Canada before you travel.

The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

Your e-VOA gives one entry and a stay of up to 30 days, counted from the day you land in Indonesia. It cannot be extended and does not let you re-enter after you leave.

E-Visa On Arrival: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days, one entry only: The e-VOA lets you land once and stay up to 30 days. If you leave Indonesia before the 30 days end, you cannot re-enter on the same e-VOA.

  • 90 days to use it: The e-VOA itself stays valid for 90 days after it is issued, so you can pick any arrival date in that window. Your 30-day stay only starts once you land.

  • No extension on the e-VOA: You cannot extend an e-VOA. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or a different visa at an immigration office before your 30 days run out.

  • Overstaying costs money: Staying past your 30 days brings a daily fine. Staying more than 60 days over can lead to detention, deportation, or a ban on returning to Indonesia.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a Canadian applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan of your Canadian passport's biodata page, valid at least 6 months from arrival, saved as JPG, JPEG or PNG under 200 KB.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent digital photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, under 200 KB. No different size rule applies to Canadian applicants.

  • Payment card

A Visa, Mastercard or JCB card with 3D Secure and international payments enabled. Canadian debit cards are not accepted; it does not need to be in your own name.

  • Return or onward ticket

A copy of your ticket out of Indonesia. It is a stated e-VOA requirement, and an officer can ask to see it on arrival.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 2–4 weeks. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, business meetings, government visits, goods purchasing or transit only?

  2. Will you arrive at one of Indonesia's listed e-VOA airports, seaports or land borders?

  3. Is your Canadian passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?

  4. Will your whole stay fit in 30 days, with only one entry needed?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Confirm you can use the e-VOA

Canadian passports are on Indonesia's e-VOA list, so check yours is valid for at least 6 months from your planned arrival date.

  2. 2

    Scan your documents

Save a colour scan of your passport's biodata page and a passport photo, both as JPG, JPEG or PNG under 200 KB. Have a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card ready; Canadian debit cards are not accepted.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register on the official portal

Create an account at evisa.imigrasi.go.id and activate it from the confirmation email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Enter your trip details

Sign in, pick the visitor visa (e-VOA), then enter your arrival date, entry point and Indonesian address, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay within 120 minutes

Pay by Visa, Mastercard or JCB as soon as the confirmation page appears. If 120 minutes pass unpaid, you must submit the application again.

  4. 6

    Download your e-VOA

Once approved, download the visa from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Carry a copy on arrival

Keep the e-VOA with your passport and return ticket. An officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  2. 8

    Submit the arrival card

Complete the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before landing, and keep the QR code for the border.

  3. 9

Plan ahead if you need longer

To stay past 30 days, apply for a residence permit extension at an immigration office before your e-VOA runs out. It cannot be renewed online.

Questions Canadian travellers actually ask

No. Canada is on the e-VOA list, so the online application replaces the old paper visa-on-arrival counter. Apply before you fly at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Yes. Every traveller, including infants and children listed on a parent's passport, needs a separate e-VOA application.

No. Only Visa, Mastercard or JCB cards with 3D Secure and international payments enabled are accepted. The card does not have to be in your own name.

No. It is single-entry only. For multiple entries, apply for a different e-Visa type at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in Canada before travelling.

Yes, transit is one of the purposes it covers, but you still need to show a return or onward ticket on arrival.

You can apply from anywhere, including Canada, using your passport details online before your flight to Indonesia.

You cannot enter on that e-VOA once the 90-day window has passed. You would need to apply for a new one before travelling.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Canadian plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Indonesia uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type A and B. A A-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 120 V · 60 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type C adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of Canada

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

$1 ≈ Rp11,869.9 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
