Do French citizens need a visa for Indonesia?

No, French citizens do not need to visit an embassy: Indonesia's e-VOA lets most French passport holders apply online before flying.

The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

The e-VOA allows a single stay of up to 30 days from the date a French citizen arrives in Indonesia. It is not extendable: once the 30 days are used, a different permit is needed to remain.

E-Visa On Arrival: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • One stay, one entry: The e-VOA covers one entry only. Leaving Indonesia and coming back needs a fresh e-VOA, not a re-entry on the same one.

  • 30 days means 30 days: The count starts on the day of arrival. It is not renewable or extendable at the airport or online; it does not stretch to cover a later flight home.

  • Staying longer needs a different route: To stay past 30 days, a French citizen must apply for a residence permit or another visa type at an Indonesian immigration office before the e-VOA expires, not after.

  • Overstaying has consequences: Staying past the 30 days brings a daily fine. More than 60 days over can lead to detention, deportation or a future travel ban.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a French applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB. French passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

A French-issued card works if it has 3D Secure enabled and is open to international transactions. It does not need to be in the applicant's own name.

  • Return or onward ticket

A printed or digital copy of a return ticket to France or an onward ticket out of Indonesia; an immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival.

When should you apply?

Indonesia's immigration advises applying at least 48 hours before departure. Applying about a week ahead leaves room to fix a rejected photo or scan and resubmit before flying from France.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on an ordinary French passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date?

  2. Will your stay in Indonesia be 30 days or less?

  3. Are you arriving at one of the named airports, seaports or land crossings on the official list?

  4. Do you have a return or onward ticket out of Indonesia to show on arrival?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

Make sure your French passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, and confirm the e-VOA covers your trip rather than an embassy visa.

  2. 2

    Scan your documents

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo, both under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. Have a French Visa, Mastercard or JCB card ready, with 3D Secure enabled.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the e-VOA, enter your arrival details and your address in Indonesia, and upload your scanned passport page and photo.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online with your French-issued Visa, Mastercard or JCB card within 120 minutes of starting, or the application must be submitted again.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Carry a copy on arrival

Keep a printed or digital copy of the e-VOA with your passport and onward ticket. An immigration officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  2. 8

    Submit the arrival card

Submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online within 3 days before arriving, and keep the QR code it emails you to show at the border.

  3. 9

    Track or extend if needed

Use the official tracking tool to check your application, or visit an Indonesian immigration office before the 30 days end if you need to stay longer.

Questions French travellers actually ask

No. The e-VOA must be applied for and paid for online before you fly. There is no longer a paper visa-on-arrival counter for the e-VOA at the airport.

No. Indonesia's e-VOA and visa-free rules are based on the passport you travel on, not on where you live. A French passport is treated the same wherever the holder resides.

You need a Visa, Mastercard or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled and open to international payments. Most French bank cards qualify, but check with your bank before applying if you are unsure.

This guide covers travel on a French passport only. Dual nationals holding Indonesian citizenship should check their situation with an Indonesian embassy or consulate, since different rules can apply.

Yes, each traveller, including children, needs their own e-VOA application and their own All Indonesia Arrival Card submission, using the child's own passport.

The connection does not matter. What counts is the Indonesian airport, seaport or land crossing where you actually arrive. It must be on the official list for the e-VOA to apply.

No. The e-VOA is only issued against a valid French passport. An identity card is not accepted for entry to Indonesia.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your French plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as France — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of France

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

€1 ≈ Rp17,561 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
