The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

The e-VOA lets Belgian citizens stay in Indonesia for up to 30 days from the date they arrive, on a single entry. It cannot be extended beyond that; a different permit is needed to stay longer.

E-Visa On Arrival: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • One entry only: The e-VOA covers a single entry. Leaving Indonesia ends it, even if the 30 days have not run out. A new trip needs a new e-VOA.

  • No extension of the e-VOA itself: The 30 days cannot simply be extended. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit or another visa type at an Indonesian immigration office before the e-VOA expires.

  • Overstaying has real costs: Overstaying brings a daily fine. More than 60 days over can lead to detention, deportation or a future travel ban.

  • Passport validity is separate: The 6-month passport validity rule is checked at application and on arrival. It does not add to or reduce the 30 days you are allowed to stay.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a Belgian applicant.

  • Passport biodata page

Colour scan or photo of the full biodata page, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB. Belgian passports must be valid for at least 6 months from the arrival date.

  • Passport-style photograph

Recent passport-size photo, JPG, JPEG or PNG, maximum 200 KB.

  • Mastercard, Visa or JCB card

A Belgian bank card works if it has 3D Secure enabled and is open to international transactions. The charge is taken in rupiah, so your bank converts it from euros at its own rate.

  • Return or onward ticket

A printed or digital copy of a return or connecting ticket out of Indonesia; an immigration officer can ask to see it on arrival.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 7–10 business days. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Apply at least a week before you fly from Belgium. This leaves time to fix a rejected photo or scan and still meet the 48-hour minimum.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on an ordinary Belgian passport valid for at least 6 months after you arrive?

  2. Is your trip for tourism, a business meeting, a government visit, goods purchasing or transit of 30 days or less?

  3. Will you arrive at one of the named e-VOA airports, seaports or land crossings?

  4. Do you have a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled for online payment?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

As a Belgian citizen you can use the e-VOA for a short trip. Check your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport's biodata page and prepare a passport-style photo, both under 200 KB in JPG, JPEG or PNG. Have a Belgian Mastercard, Visa or JCB card ready, with 3D Secure enabled.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register an account

Create an account on the official e-Visa website, then activate it from the verification email within one hour.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose the e-VOA, then enter your arrival details and residence address in Indonesia, and upload your documents.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online with your Belgian card within 120 minutes of starting the payment, or you will need to submit the application again. The charge is taken in rupiah and converted by your bank.

  4. 6

    Download the visa

Once approved, download the e-VOA from your account. A copy is also emailed to you.

After you apply

  1. 7

    Carry a copy on arrival

Keep a soft or hard copy of the e-VOA with your passport. An immigration officer can still refuse entry without giving a reason.

  2. 8

    Submit the arrival card

Within 3 days before landing, submit the All Indonesia Arrival Card online and keep the QR code to show with your passport at the border.

  3. 9

    Extend your stay if needed

To stay longer than 30 days, apply for a residence permit at an Indonesian immigration office before the e-VOA expires.

Questions Belgian travellers actually ask

No. Belgians must apply for the e-VOA online before flying, on the official immigration portal. There is no visa stamp issued at the airport counter for Belgian passport holders.

Only if it is a Mastercard, Visa or JCB card with 3D Secure enabled and open to international payments. Many Belgian bank cards meet this, but check with your bank before applying.

The government fee is set in rupiah. Your Belgian bank or card issuer, not Indonesian immigration, decides any conversion or foreign transaction charge on top of it.

A short transit without leaving the airport, within the time limits Indonesia sets at Soekarno-Hatta or Ngurah Rai airports, does not need an e-VOA. Leaving the airport or changing terminals does.

No. Belgium is not on the shorter visa-free list, which is mostly ASEAN countries plus a few others. Belgian citizens use the e-VOA instead.

Your e-VOA application will be refused, or you can be denied boarding or entry even with an approved e-VOA. Renew your passport before applying.

Yes. The e-VOA is applied for entirely online, so you can complete it from Belgium before your flight. You do not need to visit an embassy for this route.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Belgian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Indonesia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Belgium — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Indonesia drives on the left — the opposite of home

Compare traffic side:

Indonesia · left-hand traffic — the opposite of Belgium

  • Getting around

Indonesia is an archipelago, so domestic flights and ferries link the islands, while ride-hailing apps like Gojek and Grab are the easiest way to get around cities. Traffic in Jakarta and Bali can be heavy, so allow extra time.

  • Health

Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or boiled water. Dengue occurs, so use repellent. Malaria risk exists in rural eastern Indonesia, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, but not Jakarta or Bali's resorts; check with a doctor first.

  • Customs and etiquette

Dress modestly at temples and mosques, and remove shoes before entering homes and places of worship. Indonesia is majority Muslim, so be considerate around prayer times and during Ramadan, especially outside Bali.

Indonesian Rupiahs, cash and cards

Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).

Rp

€1 ≈ Rp17,561 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry cash outside big cities

Cards are mainly accepted in bigger cities and tourist spots like Jakarta and Bali. Many smaller businesses, warungs and markets are cash only, so keep rupiah on hand.

  • Use ATMs for local currency

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas. Always choose to be charged in rupiah, not your home currency, to avoid a poor dynamic-conversion rate. Withdrawal limits are often around 2.5-3 million rupiah per transaction.

  • Exchange only at licensed counters

Change cash at banks or licensed money changers, not informal street counters, to avoid short-changing and counterfeit notes.
