The 15-day rule, and what it does not mean

Taiwan passport holders are not visa-exempt, so the stay rule is the e-visa limit. An e-visa allows a single stay of up to 90 days, with multiple entries within that period. Stays of longer than the visa covers need a different visa.

Visa approval letter: 15 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

11 of 15 days

1 Mar – 11 Mar: 11 of the 15 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-Visa stay: A single stay of up to 90 days, with multiple entries during that period. The visa's end date is set when you apply, so request the stay you need.

  • Visa-free days do not apply: The 45-day and two-week visa-free stays in the destination guide are for other passports. Taiwan passports do not get them under the official tourism page.

  • Extensions: Extension rules for e-visas are not confirmed from an official page I could load. Check with the Immigration Department before your stay ends.

  • Overstaying: Overstaying is an immigration offence that can lead to fines and, in serious or repeated cases, deportation or a future entry ban. The official portal does not publish a fixed fine amount.

Your document checklist

Four things to have ready before you start your application, as a Taiwanese applicant.

  • Passport data page scan

Clear colour scan of the personal details page. Valid at least 6 months from arrival, with at least 1 blank page. Read the official portal for the exact rule.

  • Digital portrait photo

Recent photo, looking straight at the camera, no glasses, plain background. Upload it as a separate file from the passport scan. Check the portal for the exact size.

Only for some visa types

  • Proof of onward travel and accommodation

Only if Shown only if asked by an immigration officer on arrival. A return or onward flight ticket and a hotel booking confirmation, on paper or on your phone.
  • Pre-arrival declaration QR code

Only if All non-Vietnamese passport holders arriving by air. Completed online up to 3 days before, or on, arrival, then shown to immigration as a QR code or printed form.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip a tourist, family or short business visit?

  2. Will your stay be 90 days or less in one go?

  3. Will you enter and leave by one of the official airports, land or sea gates?

  4. Is your passport valid for 6 months after arrival, with at least 1 blank page?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check your route and entry point

Confirm that you need the e-visa for your trip. Choose the official airport, land or sea gate you will use, since the visa is valid only there.

The gate list changes. Check the portal before you book.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Scan your passport data page. Take a digital portrait photo that meets the portal's rules, as a separate file.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Complete the online application

Go to the official immigration portal. Upload your passport scan and photo, and enter your travel details exactly as they appear on your passport.

The portal moved to new addresses in November 2024. Check the notice on the old address for the current one.

  2. 4

    Pay the e-visa fee

Pay by card on the official portal. You will receive a registration code by email. Keep it to check your result and print your visa.

The fee is not refunded if the application is refused.

  3. 5

    Wait for processing

The Immigration Department reviews the application. Do not submit a second one while the first is pending.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Check your result online

Enter your registration code, email and date of birth on the official lookup page.

  2. 7

    Print your visa

Print the approved e-visa and carry it with your passport. Some airlines check it before boarding.

  3. 8

    Complete the pre-arrival declaration

Fill in the online pre-arrival declaration up to 3 days before arrival, or on arrival. Show the QR code to immigration.

Questions Taiwanese travellers actually ask

Yes. Taiwan is not on Vietnam's list of visa-exempt countries. Most tourists use the e-visa, applied for online before travel.

A single stay of up to 90 days, with multiple entries during that period. Stays longer than the visa covers need a different visa.

No. The e-visa must be applied for and approved online before you travel. You then print it to show on arrival.

Only through an official airport, land border gate or seaport. You must use the same gate you named on your application. The list changes, so check the portal before you book.

The extension rules are not confirmed from an official page for Taiwan passports. Check with the Immigration Department before your stay ends.

Yes. Non-Vietnamese passport holders arriving by air must complete the pre-arrival declaration up to 3 days before, or on, arrival, and show the QR code to immigration.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Taiwanese plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type A

Type A is used both at home and in Vietnam, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 110 V · 60 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type A plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Vietnam drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Vietnam · right-hand traffic — same as Taiwan

  • Getting around

Cities are dense with motorbike traffic. Cross roads slowly and predictably, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and book trains or flights ahead for longer trips between regions.

  • Health precautions

Dengue is a year-round risk, so use insect repellent and cover up. Avoid tap water and swimming in untreated fresh water. Check routine vaccines and malaria advice for rural travel with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Customs and etiquette

Remove your shoes before entering homes and some temples, dress modestly at religious sites, and use both hands to offer or receive money, gifts or business cards.

Vietnamese Dongs, cash and cards

Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND).

  • Carry small dong notes

Cash in Vietnamese dong is still standard for street food, markets and small shops. Watch out for the 20,000 and 500,000 notes, which are a similar blue shade.

  • Cards work in cities

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops in larger cities, and contactless payment is increasingly common.

  • Use bank ATMs and plan withdrawals

International cards work at ATMs nationwide, but local banks cap withdrawals lower than international ones. Withdraw extra cash before heading to rural areas with fewer ATMs.
