The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

As a Swedish citizen, you can stay in Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days on a single entry, for tourism, business meetings or family visits. This does not cover paid work or stays beyond 45 days.

Tourist E-visa: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • One visa-free stay: The exemption covers one visit of up to 45 days. It is single entry: once you leave Vietnam, that exemption is used up for that trip.

  • Leaving and coming back: You can re-enter Vietnam visa-free again and receive a fresh 45-day stay, without a waiting period between visits.

  • Staying longer: Visa-free entry cannot be extended from inside Vietnam. For a longer trip, or one needing multiple entries on a single visa, apply for an e-visa before you travel instead.

  • Work is not covered: Both visa-free entry and the e-visa cover tourism, business meetings and family visits only. Paid work needs a work permit and a different visa.

Your document checklist

Three things to have ready before you start your application, as a Swedish applicant.

  • Passport data page

Valid for at least 6 months after your entry date, with one blank page. Needed only if you apply for the e-visa; for visa-free entry you simply show your passport at the border.

  • Return or onward ticket and hotel booking

Immigration can ask Swedish visa-free travellers for a return or onward flight ticket and a hotel booking confirmation at the border.

Only for some visa types

  • Payment card for the e-visa fee

Only if e-visa applicants only. Swedish Visa and Mastercard debit or credit cards work on the e-visa portal. The fee is charged in US dollars, so your bank may add a small currency conversion charge.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 8–10 business days. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Most Swedish citizens use visa-free entry and need no application. This applies only if you choose the e-visa for a longer stay or extra entries.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, a business meeting or a family visit?

  2. Will your whole stay fit within 90 days?

  3. Will you enter and exit through one of the official e-visa airports, land or sea gates?

  4. Does your passport have at least 6 months' validity and a blank page left?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Decide if you need to apply at all

As a Swedish citizen, you can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days for tourism, business or family visits. Only apply for the e-visa if your trip is longer, needs multiple entries, or is not covered by the exemption.

  2. 2

    Choose your entry point

If you do apply for the e-visa, pick the airport, land or sea gate you will use. You cannot change it after applying.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply on the official portal

Fill in the e-visa application on the National Portal on Immigration, upload your passport scan and photo, and pay the fee online by card.

  2. 4

    Keep your registration code

You will get a registration code by email. Keep it together with your email and date of birth to check your result later.

After you apply

  1. 5

    Check your result

Look up your e-visa status on the portal's lookup page once the processing time has passed.

  2. 6

Print your visa and complete pre-arrival steps

Print the approved e-visa and fill in Vietnam's pre-arrival declaration up to 3 days before, or on, arrival, then show the QR code at immigration.

Questions Swedish travellers actually ask

No. Swedish passport holders can enter Vietnam visa-free for stays of up to 45 days for tourism, so a two-week trip needs no visa at all.

Yes. You can re-enter Vietnam visa-free again after leaving, and you get a fresh 45-day stay with no waiting period between visits.

The 45-day visa-free allowance will not cover a 60-day stay. Apply for an e-visa before you travel, as it can cover stays of up to 90 days.

It covers business meetings as well as tourism and family visits. It does not cover paid work, which needs a work permit and a different visa.

Yes. The official portal takes payment by card in US dollars, so a Swedish Visa or Mastercard works, though your bank may add a currency conversion charge.

No. Both visa-free entry and the e-visa require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your entry date. Renew it before you travel.

Children need their own passport to travel to Vietnam. If it is a Swedish passport, the same 45-day visa-free entry applies to them.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Swedish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Vietnam, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Vietnam drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Vietnam · right-hand traffic — same as Sweden

  • Getting around

Cities are dense with motorbike traffic. Cross roads slowly and predictably, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and book trains or flights ahead for longer trips between regions.

  • Health precautions

Dengue is a year-round risk, so use insect repellent and cover up. Avoid tap water and swimming in untreated fresh water. Check routine vaccines and malaria advice for rural travel with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Customs and etiquette

Remove your shoes before entering homes and some temples, dress modestly at religious sites, and use both hands to offer or receive money, gifts or business cards.

Vietnamese Dongs, cash and cards

Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND).

  • Carry small dong notes

Cash in Vietnamese dong is still standard for street food, markets and small shops. Watch out for the 20,000 and 500,000 notes, which are a similar blue shade.

  • Cards work in cities

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops in larger cities, and contactless payment is increasingly common.

  • Use bank ATMs and plan withdrawals

International cards work at ATMs nationwide, but local banks cap withdrawals lower than international ones. Withdraw extra cash before heading to rural areas with fewer ATMs.
