The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

Finnish passport holders can stay in Vietnam for up to 45 days visa-free, for any purpose. This runs from your entry date and does not depend on your passport type.

Tourist E-visa: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 45-day visa-free stay: Set by Government Resolution No. 44/NQ-CP, in force from 15 March 2025 to 14 March 2028. It covers tourism, business and other short visits, with no separate application.

  • It does not mean a visa on landing: You still need a passport valid 6 months beyond arrival and, by air, the pre-arrival declaration. There is no stamp or sticker to collect; border control simply lets you in.

  • Need longer than 45 days: The 45-day exemption cannot be extended from inside Vietnam. If you need more time, or multiple entries, apply for the e-visa before you travel, which covers up to 90 days.

  • Staying past your allowed days: Overstaying the visa-free period is treated as an immigration offence and can lead to fines or a future entry refusal, as with any other visa type.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as a Finnish applicant.

  • Proof of onward travel and accommodation

A return flight ticket and hotel booking, on paper or on your phone. Immigration can ask for this whether you travel visa-free or on an e-visa.

Only for some visa types

  • Passport data page scan

Only if e-Visa applicants only. Needed only if you apply for the e-visa. Clear colour scan of the personal details page, valid 6+ months from entry with one blank page. Not needed for visa-free entry.
  • Digital portrait photo

Only if e-Visa applicants only. Needed only for the e-visa. A straight-on photo on a plain background, no glasses, uploaded separately from the passport scan.
  • Card for the e-visa fee

Only if e-Visa applicants only. The portal takes payment in US dollars by card. A standard Finnish Visa or Mastercard works; your bank converts the charge from euros.
  • Pre-arrival declaration QR code

Only if All arrivals by air. Fill this in online up to 3 days before, or on, arrival and show the QR code to immigration. It applies to Finnish citizens arriving by air, visa-free or not.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Will your trip in Vietnam last longer than 45 days?

  2. Are you entering and leaving through one of Vietnam's official e-visa airports, land crossings or seaports?

  3. Is your passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  4. Is your visit for tourism or short business, rather than work, study or long-term residence?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check if you even need the e-visa

As a Finnish citizen you can enter visa-free for trips of up to 45 days. Only plan to apply for the e-visa if you will stay longer, re-enter more than once, or want a pre-approved document.

  2. 2

    Pick your entry point

Choose the airport, land crossing or seaport you will use. If you apply for the e-visa this must match your application and cannot be changed afterwards.

  3. 3

    Prepare your passport and photo

Make sure your passport is valid 6+ months from arrival with a blank page, and have a digital portrait photo ready if applying for the e-visa.

On the official portal

  1. 4

    Fill in the online application

On the official National Portal on Immigration, upload your passport scan and photo and enter your travel details, including the fixed entry date you intend to use.

  2. 5

    Pay by card

Pay the fee in US dollars with a standard Finnish debit or credit card. You will get a registration code by email to check your result later.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Check your result

Enter your registration code, email and date of birth on the lookup page to see if your e-visa is approved.

  2. 7

Print your e-visa, if you used one

Carry a printed copy with your passport. Visa-free travellers do not need to print anything.

  3. 8

    Complete the pre-arrival declaration

Whether you travel visa-free or on an e-visa, fill in the pre-arrival declaration online up to 3 days before, or on, arrival and show the QR code at immigration.

Questions Finnish travellers actually ask

No, not for a trip of up to 45 days. This applies to tourism, business and other purposes, under a government resolution in force from March 2025 to March 2028.

Not under the visa-free rule, which cannot be extended from inside the country. For a longer stay, apply for the e-visa before you travel, which covers up to 90 days, or an embassy visa for other purposes.

Yes. Some Finnish travellers choose the e-visa anyway, for a pre-approved document, multiple entries, or a stay beyond 45 days.

Yes. It applies to all non-Vietnamese passport holders arriving by air, whether or not you hold a visa.

Yes. The resolution covers Finnish citizens regardless of passport type or purpose of entry, as long as normal entry conditions are met.

Overstaying is an immigration offence in Vietnam, the same as overstaying any other visa, and can lead to fines or a future entry refusal.

The visa-free rule is not confirmed to allow unlimited re-entries. If you plan more than one entry, the e-visa's multiple-entry option gives more certainty.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Finnish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Vietnam, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Vietnam drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Vietnam · right-hand traffic — same as Finland

  • Getting around

Cities are dense with motorbike traffic. Cross roads slowly and predictably, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and book trains or flights ahead for longer trips between regions.

  • Health precautions

Dengue is a year-round risk, so use insect repellent and cover up. Avoid tap water and swimming in untreated fresh water. Check routine vaccines and malaria advice for rural travel with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Customs and etiquette

Remove your shoes before entering homes and some temples, dress modestly at religious sites, and use both hands to offer or receive money, gifts or business cards.

Vietnamese Dongs, cash and cards

Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND).

₫

€1 ≈ ₫27,411.2 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Carry small dong notes

Cash in Vietnamese dong is still standard for street food, markets and small shops. Watch out for the 20,000 and 500,000 notes, which are a similar blue shade.

  • Cards work in cities

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops in larger cities, and contactless payment is increasingly common.

  • Use bank ATMs and plan withdrawals

International cards work at ATMs nationwide, but local banks cap withdrawals lower than international ones. Withdraw extra cash before heading to rural areas with fewer ATMs.
