Belgian citizens can stay 45 days visa-free for tourism, or up to 90 days on an e-visa for other purposes or longer trips. Neither route can be extended from inside Vietnam.

Visa-free: 45 days, tourism only: Covers a single entry for tourism purposes, under Resolution 229/NQ-CP. It does not cover business, work or study trips, even if they are short.
e-Visa: up to 90 days: Your e-visa's exact validity is the entry and exit dates you declare when you apply. You choose single or multiple entry on the application form.
No extensions from inside Vietnam: A visa-free stay cannot be extended once you are in Vietnam. For an e-visa, contact the Vietnam Immigration Department before your approved stay ends.
Overstaying either route: Staying past your 45 days or your e-visa's exit date is an overstay. It can mean a fine at departure and may affect a future entry.

The official portal does not publish a fixed earliest or latest day to apply, but your e-visa's dates are fixed once issued, so apply once your travel dates are set.
Do you hold a valid ordinary Belgian passport, valid at least 6 months after you arrive?
Is your trip for tourism, business or another purpose the e-visa covers, rather than paid work or study?
Will you enter and exit through one of the official e-visa airports, land or sea gates?
Is your stay 90 days or less?

Answer all four
Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.
Before you apply
Check if you even need the e-visa
If your trip is tourism only and 45 days or less, Belgian passport holders can enter Vietnam visa-free under Resolution 229/NQ-CP. Apply for the e-visa only for longer stays, business trips or other purposes.
Prepare your scan, photo and a card
Scan your Belgian passport's data page and take a digital portrait photo. Have a Visa or Mastercard ready, since Bancontact-only cards are not accepted for the online fee.
On the official portal
Fill in the application
Go to the official National Portal on Immigration, enter your Belgian passport details and travel plan, and upload your scan and photo.
Pay and keep your registration code
Pay the fee with your international card. The portal emails you a registration code, which you need to check your result and print your visa.
After you apply
Check your result online
Enter your registration code, email and date of birth on the e-visa lookup page to see if you are approved.
Print your visa and complete pre-arrival steps
Print the approved e-visa, and complete Vietnam's pre-arrival declaration before or on landing, showing the QR code to immigration.

Yes. Under Resolution 229/NQ-CP, Belgian passport holders can enter Vietnam visa-free for tourism, for up to 45 days from the date of entry, from 15 August 2025 to 14 August 2028.
No. The exemption is for tourism purposes only. For business trips, apply for an e-visa or another visa type instead, even if your trip is short.
The exemption covers a single stay of 45 days from your entry date. If you plan to leave and return during your trip, check the current rule with Vietnamese immigration, or use a multiple-entry e-visa instead.
Yes. The e-visa is open to every nationality, including Belgians. It is useful for trips over 45 days, business travel, or when you want a multiple-entry visa.
Use a Visa or Mastercard. A Bancontact-only Belgian debit card is not accepted for payment on the official portal.
You are overstaying. This can lead to a fine when you leave and may affect a future entry to Vietnam. Apply for an e-visa or leave before day 45 if you need more time.
Yes. Every passport holder, including children, needs their own passport and qualifies for the visa-free stay or e-visa in their own right.
No, not under the standard rule. Vietnam expects your passport to stay valid at least 6 months from your entry date, for both visa-free entry and the e-visa. Renew it first.

Type C is used both at home and in Vietnam, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

220 V · 50 Hz
Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.
Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Getting around
Cities are dense with motorbike traffic. Cross roads slowly and predictably, use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and book trains or flights ahead for longer trips between regions.
Health precautions
Dengue is a year-round risk, so use insect repellent and cover up. Avoid tap water and swimming in untreated fresh water. Check routine vaccines and malaria advice for rural travel with a travel clinic before you go.
Customs and etiquette
Remove your shoes before entering homes and some temples, dress modestly at religious sites, and use both hands to offer or receive money, gifts or business cards.
Vietnam uses the Vietnamese Dong (VND).
€1 ≈ ₫27,411.2 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old
Carry small dong notes
Cash in Vietnamese dong is still standard for street food, markets and small shops. Watch out for the 20,000 and 500,000 notes, which are a similar blue shade.
Cards work in cities
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops in larger cities, and contactless payment is increasingly common.
Use bank ATMs and plan withdrawals
International cards work at ATMs nationwide, but local banks cap withdrawals lower than international ones. Withdraw extra cash before heading to rural areas with fewer ATMs.
