The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Cambodian tourist e-visa or visa on arrival lets a Swedish citizen stay 30 days from entry, on a single entry. It can be extended once for a further 30 days at the immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days means 30 days: The 30-day stay is fixed from your entry date. It is not renewed by leaving and re-entering, since the e-visa and visa on arrival are single entry only.

  • One extension only: A tourist visa can be extended once, for 30 more days, at Cambodia's immigration department in Phnom Penh. There is no further extension after that.

  • Overstaying costs money, not freedom: Staying past your 30 days (plus any extension) means paying a daily fine in cash when you leave. It does not let you stay indefinitely.

  • Entry window differs from stay length: The visa itself is valid 3 months from issue for entering Cambodia. Once you enter, the 30-day stay clock starts separately, counted from your arrival date.

Your document checklist

Seven things to have ready before you start your application, as a Swedish applicant.

  • Passport

Valid at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with one blank visa page. Swedish passports are biometric and normally meet this easily if renewed within the last 10 years.

  • Passport-style photo

A recent colour photo, uploaded as JPEG or PNG for the e-visa. Swedish passport photo booths and photographers produce standard passport-size photos that work for the upload.

  • Onward or return ticket

A return or onward flight ticket, which a border officer can ask to see even with an approved e-visa.

  • Accommodation details

A hotel booking or host address, sometimes asked for at check-in.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Generated after filling in the free Cambodia e-Arrival form within 7 days of arrival. Save it on your phone or print it, since Swedish mobile roaming may not work at every checkpoint.

Only for some visa types

  • Visa application form

Only if Applying by e-visa. Completed online at evisa.gov.kh. Enter your details exactly as printed in your Swedish passport.
  • Payment card

Only if Applying by e-visa. A Visa or Mastercard that allows online payment in US dollars works for the e-visa fee. Most Swedish bank cards support this without extra setup.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 3–5 business days. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip a single entry for tourism, 30 days or less?

  2. Will you enter and exit only at Cambodia's three international airports or the two open land posts listed by immigration?

  3. Does your Swedish passport have at least 6 months' validity and one blank page left?

  4. Can you pay the e-visa fee by card and upload a digital passport photo?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

Make sure your Swedish passport has 6 months' validity and a blank page, and that you'll enter through one of the listed airports or land posts.

  2. 2

Prepare a digital photo and your travel details

Scan or photograph a recent passport-style photo, and have your flight and accommodation details ready to enter on the form.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply at evisa.gov.kh

Fill in the online form with your details exactly as in your Swedish passport, upload your photo and bio page, and pay by card.

  2. 4

    Check your application status

Use the check-and-change tool on evisa.gov.kh with your reference number to see when it's approved, usually in about 3 working days.

  3. 5

    Download and print your e-visa

Once approved, download the PDF and print it to carry alongside your passport.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Submit the Cambodia e-Arrival form

No more than 7 days before you land, complete the free e-Arrival form and save the QR code it gives you.

  2. 7

    Show your documents on arrival

Present your printed e-visa, your Swedish passport and your e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer.

Questions Swedish travellers actually ask

Yes. Swedish passport holders can get a visa on arrival in cash at Cambodia's three international airports and the two open land posts, as an alternative to applying online.

Yes. Every traveller, including Swedes with an approved e-visa, must also complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival form no more than 7 days before they land, and keep its QR code.

This page covers visas, not driving rules. Check Cambodia's own requirements for foreign licences separately before renting a vehicle.

Most Swedish Visa and Mastercard cards that allow online payments work on evisa.gov.kh. Check with your bank before applying if you are unsure.

The fee is not refunded. Correct the problem, often a photo or a mismatched name, and submit a fresh application with enough time left before you fly.

Yes. It's the only official Cambodian e-visa website, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Other sites charge more for the same service.

Not currently. Land crossings with Thailand are closed due to an ongoing border dispute, so Swedish travellers coming from Thailand should fly or use the open Laos or Vietnam land posts.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Swedish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Sweden — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Sweden

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
