Three routes into Cambodia

  • Most people

    e-Visa

Norwegian passport holders are not on Cambodia's visa-free list, so almost everyone applies online at evisa.gov.kh before flying and pays by card. The e-visa covers a single tourist entry.

  • At the border

    Visa on arrival

If you did not apply online, you can usually get a visa on the spot at Cambodia's three international airports or the two open land borders, paid in clean US dollar cash.

  • Rare cases

    Embassy visa

A small number of situations fall outside the e-visa or visa on arrival, for example some business or long-stay purposes. Those travellers apply at a Cambodian embassy before flying.

The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Cambodia tourist e-visa or visa on arrival lets a Norwegian citizen stay for 30 days from the date of entry. It can be extended once for a further 30 days at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days means 30 days: The stay is counted from the day you enter, not the day the visa was issued. The visa itself must be used for entry within 3 months of its issue date.

  • One extension only: A tourist visa can be extended once, for another 30 days, by applying at Cambodia's immigration department before the first 30 days run out.

  • Overstaying costs money: Staying past your allowed days brings a daily fine, paid in cash when you leave the country. It does not give you an automatic extra stay.

Your document checklist

Eight things to have ready before you start your application, as a Norwegian applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank visa page. Norwegian passports typically meet this easily if renewed in the last 10 years.

  • Passport-style photo

A recent colour photo, uploaded as a JPEG or PNG for the e-visa. A passport photo booth photo works if it meets standard passport photo rules.

  • Payment card

The e-visa fee is paid online by card in US dollars. A standard Norwegian debit or credit card that allows foreign currency payments works; check your bank allows the charge.

  • Onward or return ticket

A return or onward flight ticket can be requested at the border.

  • Accommodation details

A hotel booking or host address, sometimes asked for at check-in.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Generated after completing the free Cambodia e-Arrival form online within 7 days of arrival. It is not a visa, but is checked alongside it.

Only for some visa types

  • Visa application form

Only if Applying by e-visa. Completed online at evisa.gov.kh. Enter your name exactly as printed in your Norwegian passport.
  • Invitation or sponsor letter

Only if Business (E) visa applicants. A letter from a Cambodian company, organisation or host, on their letterhead.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling for tourism or a short business visit, not to live, work or study in Cambodia?

  2. Is your Norwegian passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  3. Will you enter through one of Cambodia's three international airports or the two listed open land borders?

  4. Can you pay the e-visa fee online by card?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

Make sure your Norwegian passport has at least 6 months' validity and a blank page. Confirm the e-visa, rather than an embassy visa, fits your trip.

  2. 2

    Prepare a digital photo

Have a recent colour passport-style photo ready as a JPEG or PNG file to upload.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply at evisa.gov.kh

Fill in the online form with your details exactly as in your passport, upload your photo and passport bio page, and pay the fee by card.

  2. 4

    Check your application status

Use the check-and-change tool on evisa.gov.kh with your reference number to see whether your e-visa has been approved, usually in about 3 working days.

  3. 5

    Download and print your e-visa

Once approved, download the PDF and print it. Carry the paper copy with your passport.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Complete the e-Arrival form

No more than 7 days before you land, fill in the free Cambodia e-Arrival form and save the QR code it gives you.

  2. 7

    Show your documents on arrival

Present your printed e-visa, your Norwegian passport, and your e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer at your entry checkpoint.

Questions Norwegian travellers actually ask

Yes. Norwegians can usually get a visa on arrival at Cambodia's international airports or the two open land borders, paid in cash US dollars. Applying for the e-visa online first avoids any border queue.

Check with Cambodia's nearest embassy or consulate covering Norway if you need a visa type the e-visa or visa on arrival does not cover, such as a long-stay or work visa.

The e-visa fee is paid online by card in US dollars. Most Norwegian debit and credit cards that allow foreign currency payments should work, but check with your bank before applying.

If you leave the airport's international transit area you need a visa or an e-visa, the same as for any other entry. Staying airside without passing immigration does not need one.

The e-visa and visa on arrival cover entry at Cambodia's three international airports and only two open land borders, with Laos and with Vietnam. Land crossings with Thailand are currently closed, so check the current checkpoint list before planning an overland route.

A rejected application is not refunded. Check the reason, usually a form mismatch, passport issue or a poor-quality photo, fix it, and apply again with enough time before you fly.

Children travelling on their own passport generally need their own visa, the same type as an adult. If your child is on your passport, check the rules for infants with an embassy or the e-visa portal before applying.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Norwegian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Norway — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Norway

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
