Three routes into Cambodia

  • Most people

    e-Visa

Apply online at evisa.gov.kh before you fly. It gives a single-entry tourist visa and is the route most Irish travellers use, since it avoids queuing and cash payment at the border.

  • Paying at the border

    Visa on arrival

Available at Cambodia's three international airports and the two open land borders. You pay in cash, in US dollars, and need two printed passport photos rather than a digital upload.

  • Longer or business trips

    Embassy visa

Irish citizens needing a visa type the e-visa does not cover, or wanting it arranged in advance in person, can apply at a Cambodian embassy before travelling.

Which Irish passport are you holding?

Ireland issues two passport products. Only one works for Cambodia.

  • Irish Passport (booklet)

    e-Visa eligible

Use this passport for the e-visa, visa on arrival or an embassy visa. It needs 6 months' validity and one blank page.

  • Irish Passport Card

    Not accepted

The passport card is only valid for travel within the EU/EEA. Cambodian immigration does not accept passport cards, so travel on the passport booklet instead.

The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival lets an Irish citizen stay in Cambodia for 30 days from the date of entry. This can be extended once, for a further 30 days, at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days means from entry, not issue: The 30-day stay is counted from the day you actually enter Cambodia, not from when the e-visa was approved. The visa itself stays valid for a set window before you must enter.

  • One extension only: Tourist visas can be extended once for 30 more days at the immigration department. There is no second extension for a tourist visa; a further stay needs a different visa type.

  • Overstaying costs money and risk: Irish government advice warns that overstaying brings a daily fine with no upper limit, and that longer overstays can lead to detention or deportation.

  • Single entry only: The tourist e-visa and visa on arrival allow one entry. Leaving Cambodia and coming back needs a fresh visa, not a re-entry on the same one.

Your document checklist

Seven things to have ready before you start your application, as an Irish applicant.

  • Passport booklet

Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with one blank visa page and no damage or missing pages. The Irish passport card is not accepted.

  • Passport-style photo

Upload a digital colour photo for the e-visa. For visa on arrival, bring two printed passport photos instead.

  • Payment method

The e-visa is paid by card online. Visa on arrival is cash only, in clean US dollar bills; officers can refuse worn or torn notes.

  • Onward or return ticket

Keep a copy of your return or onward flight, in case it is asked for at the border.

  • Accommodation details

Keep your hotel booking or host address to hand for check-in.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival form within 7 days of arrival and save the QR code, separately from your visa.

Only for some visa types

  • Visa application form

Only if Applying by e-visa or at an embassy. Completed online on evisa.gov.kh for the e-visa, or the paper form at an embassy.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism or short business visits, not work, study or long-term stay?

  2. Will you enter through one of Cambodia's three international airports or the two open land borders?

  3. Is your Irish passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  4. Are you travelling on your Irish passport booklet, not the passport card?

Questions Irish travellers actually ask

No. Cambodian immigration does not accept passport cards. Travel on your Irish passport booklet, with at least 6 months' validity and a blank page.

Irish government advice is to apply at least 4 days before you travel. Applying about a week ahead gives you time to fix a rejected photo or document and reapply.

The e-visa is paid online by card in US dollars at checkout, so your Irish card is charged in USD. Visa on arrival is cash only, in clean US dollar notes; euros are not accepted at the border.

No. Ireland has no embassy in Cambodia; the nearest Irish embassy is in Hanoi, Vietnam. Cambodian visas are issued by Cambodia's own government, through evisa.gov.kh, on arrival, or at a Cambodian embassy.

Report it to the police for a report, then contact the Irish Embassy in Hanoi, which covers Cambodia. You will need a replacement visa and an exit visa from Cambodian immigration before you can leave.

No. Land crossings with Thailand are currently closed due to a border dispute, and Irish travellers are advised against all travel within 20km of that border. Use an international airport or the open crossings from Laos or Vietnam instead.

Yes. The e-Arrival form is a separate, free declaration that every traveller submits within 7 days of arrival. It does not replace the visa.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Irish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type G

Type G is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Ireland — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type G plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — the opposite of home

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — the opposite of Ireland

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
