The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival lets German passport holders stay 30 days from the date of entry. This can be extended once for a further 30 days at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days means 30 days: The stay is counted from the day you enter, not from the visa's issue date. The e-visa itself is usually valid for 3 months to enter, but once you cross the border the 30-day clock starts.

  • One extension only: A tourist (T) visa can be extended once for 30 more days at the immigration department in Phnom Penh. There is no second extension for tourists.

  • Overstaying costs a daily fine: Staying past your 30 days, plus any extension, means a daily cash fine paid at the airport or border when you leave. It does not let you stay longer legally.

  • Register your stay: German authorities note that Cambodia expects foreign visitors, including tourists, to register their presence (FPCS). This registration is also needed if you want to extend your visa.

Your document checklist

Eight things to have ready before you start your application, as a German applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with a blank visa page. German national ID cards and provisional ID cards are not accepted for entry.

  • Passport-style photo

A recent colour photo. Upload it as a JPEG or PNG on the e-visa portal, or bring a printed copy for visa on arrival or an embassy application.

  • Debit or credit card

The e-visa fee is paid online by card. Visa on arrival is cash only, so carry clean, undamaged US dollar notes if you plan to use that route instead.

  • Onward or return ticket

A return or onward flight ticket can be asked for at the border or by an embassy.

  • Accommodation details

A hotel booking or host address, sometimes asked for at check-in or by an embassy.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Generated after completing the free Cambodia e-Arrival form online, at the earliest 7 days before you land. Keep the QR code alongside your visa.

Only for some visa types

  • Visa application form

Only if Applying by e-visa or at an embassy. Completed online at evisa.gov.kh, or the paper form plus a photo for an application at a Cambodian embassy, for example the one in Berlin.
  • Invitation or sponsor letter

Only if Business (E) visa applicants. A letter from a Cambodian company, organisation or host, on their letterhead.

The German Foreign Office advises applying for the e-visa at least 2 weeks before travel, to leave room for a resubmission if a document or photo upload is rejected.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your German passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  2. Will you enter at one of Cambodia's 3 international airports or one of the 2 open land crossings?

  3. Is your trip for tourism or ordinary business, not something needing an embassy-issued visa?

  4. Can you pay the visa fee online by debit or credit card?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and route

Make sure your German passport is valid for 6 months after you arrive and has a blank page. A German ID card cannot be used to enter Cambodia.

  2. 2

    Prepare your photo and documents

Get a recent digital passport-style photo and have your travel and accommodation details ready, in case the form or an officer asks for them.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply on evisa.gov.kh

Fill in the form with your German passport details, upload your photo and passport bio page, and pay by debit or credit card.

Apply around 2 weeks before you travel, so there's time to fix a rejected upload.

  2. 4

    Download your e-visa

Once approved, download and print the PDF. Carry it with your passport; Cambodian border officers check the printed copy.

After you apply

  1. 5

    Complete the e-Arrival form

Fill in Cambodia's free e-Arrival declaration no more than 7 days before you land, and save the QR code it gives you.

  2. 6

Show your documents at the border

Present your passport, printed e-visa and e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer at the airport or land crossing.

Questions German travellers actually ask

No. German ID cards, including provisional ones, are not accepted for entry to Cambodia. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date.

The e-visa fee is paid online by card. If your card payment fails, visa on arrival is a cash-only alternative, so bring clean US dollar notes as a backup.

No. Cambodian immigration requires at least one overnight stay in Cambodia, so a same-day crossing from a third country is not possible.

No. All land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia are currently closed due to the border situation. Use one of the 3 international airports or the 2 open crossings from Laos or Vietnam instead, and check the current list before you travel.

No. The German embassy cannot issue a Cambodian visa. Apply online at evisa.gov.kh, at the border for visa on arrival, or at a Cambodian embassy such as the one in Berlin before you leave Germany.

Cambodia expects visitors to register their presence through its FPCS system. You will also need this registration if you want to extend a tourist visa while in Cambodia.

A rejected application is not refunded. Check the reason, usually a form mistake, a poor-quality photo or a passport issue, fix it, and submit a new application with enough time left before you fly.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your German plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Germany — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Germany

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
