The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Cambodian e-visa or visa on arrival lets Danish citizens stay for 30 days from the date of entry. This can be extended once for a further 30 days at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days from entry, not from issue: The 30-day stay starts when you cross the border, not when the e-visa was approved. The visa itself stays valid for entry for 3 months from issue, so you can book flights within that window.

  • One extension only: A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival can be extended once for 30 more days at the immigration department. Plan ahead if you need longer, since further extensions are not guaranteed.

  • Overstaying costs money at the border: Staying past your allowed days means a daily fine, paid in cash when you leave Cambodia. It does not let you stay longer without consequence.

  • Single entry only: The tourist e-visa and visa on arrival are single-entry. Leaving Cambodia and coming back means a new visa, even if your 30 days are not used up.

Your document checklist

Eight things to have ready before you start your application, as a Danish applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank visa page. Standard Danish ordinary passports meet this if renewed in time.

  • Passport-style photo

A recent colour photo, uploaded as a JPEG or PNG. Danish passport photos from a photo booth or passport office usually meet the size and background rules.

  • e-Visa application form

Completed online at evisa.gov.kh with your details exactly as printed in your Danish passport.

  • Online card payment

The e-visa fee is paid by card on the portal. Use an internationally enabled Visa or Mastercard; a Dankort with no international logo may not be accepted.

  • Onward or return ticket

A return or onward flight ticket can be requested at the border.

  • Accommodation details

A hotel booking or host address, sometimes asked for at check-in.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Generated after completing the free Cambodia e-Arrival form online within 7 days of arrival. Needed alongside your e-visa or visa-on-arrival stamp.

Only for some visa types

  • Invitation or sponsor letter

Only if Business (E) visa applicants. A letter from a Cambodian company or host, on their letterhead.

The e-visa portal sets no fixed earliest date, but approval usually takes about 3 working days. Apply at least 10 days before you fly, so there is time to fix a rejected photo or form and reapply.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism or ordinary business, not study, work or long-term stay?

  2. Will you enter and exit only through one of Cambodia's three international airports or the two listed open land borders?

  3. Does your Danish passport have at least 6 months' validity and one blank page left?

  4. Can you pay the e-visa fee online with an internationally enabled card?

Questions Danish travellers actually ask

Yes. Danish passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Cambodia's three international airports and the two currently open land borders. It is paid in cash, so bring clean, undamaged US dollar notes.

Denmark issues one type of ordinary passport that all Danish e-visa applicants use. Diplomatic or service passport holders should check with a Cambodian embassy, since their process can differ.

The portal takes online card payment. A Dankort with no international Visa or Mastercard logo may not go through, so use a card that works for international online payments.

If you stay airside and do not pass through immigration, no visa is needed. If you leave the airport or change terminals through immigration, the normal e-visa or visa-on-arrival rules apply.

No. It is a separate free declaration every traveller submits online within 7 days of arrival. Danish citizens still need a visa as well, unless travelling on a passport that is visa-exempt.

The fee is not refunded. Check the refusal reason, for example a blurry photo or a passport with too little validity, fix it, and submit a new application with enough time before you fly.

Yes, the same rule applies to all nationalities. A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival can be extended once for 30 more days at Cambodia's immigration department.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Danish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Denmark — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Denmark

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
