The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival allows a 30-day stay per entry. This is not a 180-day rule like the Schengen area. Each visit needs its own visa.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Tourist e-visa: Single entry, up to 30 days. The stay counts from your arrival date.

  • Extension: A tourist visa can be extended once, by up to 30 days, at the immigration department in Phnom Penh. Plan this before the first 30 days end.

  • Business visa: A business visa's stay follows the validity it is issued with. A sponsor letter from a Cambodian company is needed.

  • Overstaying: Overstays are fined in cash per day, paid at the airport or border when you leave.

Your document checklist

Seven things to have ready before you start your application, as a Chinese applicant.

  • Passport

Valid at least 6 months after arrival, with at least one blank visa page. Visible damage can lead to refusal.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent colour photo, JPEG or PNG for the e-visa. Blurry, cropped or non-passport-style photos are often rejected.

  • Online application form

Completed on evisa.gov.kh. Names must match your passport exactly.

  • Return or onward ticket

Asked for at the border. Keep a copy with your passport.

  • Hotel booking or host address

Sometimes asked at check-in or at the border.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Free online form, completed within 7 days of arrival. Not a visa, but checked with it.

Only for some visa types

  • Sponsor letter

Only if Business visa only. A letter from the Cambodian company or organisation on its letterhead.

Three questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip a tourist trip of 30 days or less?

  2. Will your passport be valid for 6 months after arrival, with at least one blank page?

  3. Will you enter at an airport or at Bavet or Trapeang Kriel, the open land crossings?

Result

Answer all three

Three quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your visa need

Confirm on the official Cambodian site that Chinese passport holders are eligible for the e-visa.

Official site could not be read at the time of writing.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have a passport valid 6 months after arrival with a blank page, a recent digital photo, and your travel plans.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply on evisa.gov.kh

Fill in the online form, upload your photo and passport bio page, and pay by card.

  2. 4

    Download your e-visa

Once approved, usually in about 3 working days, download and print the PDF e-visa. Check its status with your reference number.

After you apply

  1. 5

    Submit the e-Arrival form

Complete the free form within 7 days of arrival and save the QR code.

  2. 6

    Show your documents on arrival

Present your printed e-visa, passport and e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer.

Questions Chinese travellers actually ask

Yes, for a typical tourist trip. An e-visa covers it. Check evisa.gov.kh before you apply, as the official site could not be confirmed at the time of writing.

Visa on arrival is available at the three international airports and some open land borders, paid in cash in US dollars. Check that you are eligible on the official site before you fly.

A tourist e-visa or visa on arrival allows 30 days per entry. It can be extended once, by up to 30 days, at the immigration department.

No. It is a free online immigration, health and customs form. You must complete it within 7 days of arrival and keep the QR code. It does not replace your visa.

Not with an e-visa right now. Trapeang Kriel (from Laos) and Bavet (from Vietnam) are the open land crossings. The Thai crossings at Poipet and Cham Yeam are temporarily closed for e-visa entry.

You pay a daily fine in cash at the airport or border when you leave. Long overstays can lead to detention and deportation.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Chinese plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type A

Type A and C sockets are used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 220 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type A and C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as China

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
