The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Cambodian e-visa, visa on arrival or tourist embassy visa lets a Canadian passport holder stay 30 days from the date of entry. This can be extended once, for a further 30 days, at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days per entry: Each entry starts a fresh 30-day count from your arrival date, whatever the visa's own three-month window to enter still shows.

  • Single entry only: Tourist and business e-visas cover one entry. Leaving Cambodia and coming back means getting a new visa, even inside the same trip.

  • One extension only: A tourist visa can be extended once, for 30 more days, at Cambodia's immigration department before your current stay ends. A second extension is not available.

  • Overstaying costs a daily fine: Staying past your visa or extension brings a daily fine, paid in cash on departure. Overstaying by 30 days or more can also mean detention or deportation.

  • Register if you extend: Cambodian immigration can require foreign nationals who extend their stay to register on its Foreigners Presence system online; skipping this can get an extension refused.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Canadian applicant.

  • Canadian passport

Valid at least 6 months after your arrival date, with one blank visa page. Damaged or heavily stamped passports can be refused.

  • Digital passport photo

Recent colour photo on a plain background, uploaded as a JPEG for the e-visa. A standard Canadian 50x70mm passport photo usually works; check the size shown on the upload screen.

  • Payment card

The e-visa fee is paid online by Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, Alipay or WeChat Pay. A Canadian-issued Visa or Mastercard is accepted; ask your bank about foreign transaction charges.

  • Return or onward ticket

Airlines flying out of Canada may ask to see this before boarding, on top of any check made at the Cambodian border.

  • Proof of funds

Global Affairs Canada advises carrying evidence you can cover your stay. Border officers can ask to see this; no fixed amount is published.

Only for some visa types

  • Business invitation letter

Only if Business (E) visa applicants. A letter from the Cambodian company or host you are visiting, on their letterhead, naming you and your travel dates.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you flying into Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville airport, or crossing at Bavet or Tropaeng Kreal?

  2. Will you enter and leave Cambodia only once on this visa?

  3. Does your Canadian passport have at least 6 months' validity and one blank page left?

  4. Can you pay online with a Canadian-issued Visa, Mastercard or similar card?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Confirm your entry point

Check that you are flying into or crossing at an e-visa checkpoint: Cambodia's three international airports, or the Bavet and Tropaeng Kreal land posts.

  2. 2

    Check your passport and photo

Make sure your Canadian passport is valid 6 months beyond your arrival date with a blank page, and have a recent digital colour photo ready to upload.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply and pay by card

Fill in the online form at evisa.gov.kh, upload your passport photo page and photo, then pay by a Visa, Mastercard or other accepted card issued in Canada.

  2. 4

    Download your approval

Check your status with your reference number using 'Check & Change' on evisa.gov.kh, then download and print the PDF once it is approved.

After you apply

  1. 5

    Submit the e-Arrival form

Complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival form no more than 7 days before you land, and save the QR code it gives you.

  2. 6

    Register with Canada (optional)

Consider signing up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad service, so Global Affairs Canada can reach you in an emergency.

  3. 7

Show your visa and QR code on arrival

Present your printed e-visa or on-arrival visa, your passport and your e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer.

Questions Canadian travellers actually ask

No. Canada has no Cambodian embassy or full consulate. Canadians can apply for a sticker visa by post or in person at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Washington, D.C., or use the e-visa or visa on arrival instead.

Yes. Evisa.gov.kh accepts Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Check with your bank about any foreign transaction charge before you pay.

Global Affairs Canada advises carrying proof you can cover your stay, since border officers can ask to see it. No fixed amount is published.

Land crossings between Cambodia and Thailand are currently closed because of a border dispute. Check Global Affairs Canada's advisory before planning any overland leg through Thailand.

No. Visa on arrival, like the e-visa, only works at Cambodia's three international airports and the two open land posts, at Bavet and Tropaeng Kreal. Other borders do not accept it.

Contact the Canadian embassy in Phnom Penh or the consulate in Siem Reap for consular help. They cannot change a Cambodian visa or immigration decision.

No. It is a free digital immigration, health and customs form that every traveller, including Canadians, must submit within 7 days of arrival. You still need a separate visa.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Canadian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type A

Type A is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 120 V · 60 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type A plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Canada

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
