The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A Cambodian tourist e-visa or visa on arrival lets a Belgian passport holder stay for 30 days from the date of entry. This can be extended once, for a further 30 days, at Cambodia's immigration department.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days means 30 days, not 90: The visa itself is usually valid for 3 months to enter Cambodia, but that is the window to arrive in, not the length of stay. Once you enter, the clock starts and you get 30 days.

  • One extension only: A tourist visa can be extended once for 30 more days at the immigration department in Cambodia. Plan the extension before your 30 days run out.

  • Overstaying costs money at exit: Overstaying brings a daily fine, paid in cash when you leave the country. It is not deducted automatically, so budget for it if you run over.

  • Single entry only: The tourist e-visa and visa on arrival are single-entry. Leaving Cambodia during your trip and coming back needs a fresh visa.

Your document checklist

Eight things to have ready before you start your application, as a Belgian applicant.

  • Belgian passport

Valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, with at least one blank visa page. An international Belgian passport works; Belgian ID cards are not accepted for Cambodia.

  • Passport-style photo

A recent colour photo on a plain background, uploaded as a JPEG or PNG for the e-visa. The same photo style as used for Belgian passport applications is accepted.

  • e-Visa application form

Completed online in English at evisa.gov.kh, with details matching your Belgian passport exactly.

  • Payment card

A Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card works for the online e-visa payment. Belgian Bancontact-only cards are not accepted online; use a card with an international scheme.

  • Onward or return ticket

A return or onward flight ticket can be requested at the border, even for e-visa holders.

  • Accommodation details

A hotel booking or host address, sometimes asked for at check-in.

  • e-Arrival QR code

Generated after completing the free Cambodia e-Arrival form online within 7 days of your arrival date.

Only for some visa types

  • Invitation or sponsor letter

Only if Business visa applicants. A letter from a Cambodian company or host on their letterhead, needed only for a business (E) visa.

The e-visa is valid 3 months from issue to enter Cambodia, so applying earlier risks it expiring unused. Allow time for the usual 3 working days processing, plus a few days to fix a rejected upload.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, or a short business visit, of 60 days or less?

  2. Will you enter through one of Cambodia's three international airports or the two listed open land borders?

  3. Is your Belgian passport valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  4. Can you pay online with a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your route

Confirm the e-visa suits your trip: tourism or short business, entering through an international airport or one of the two open land borders.

  2. 2

    Check your passport and photo

Make sure your Belgian passport has 6 months' validity and a blank page, and prepare a recent colour digital photo.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Apply at evisa.gov.kh

Fill in the form with your details exactly as on your passport, upload your photo and bio page, and pay by Visa or Mastercard.

  2. 4

    Track and download

Use the check-and-change tool with your reference number to see when it's approved, usually in about 3 working days, then download and print the PDF.

After you apply

  1. 5

    Submit the e-Arrival form

No more than 7 days before you land, complete the free Cambodia e-Arrival form and save the QR code it gives you. This is separate from the visa.

  2. 6

    Show your documents on arrival

Present your printed e-visa, your Belgian passport, and your e-Arrival QR code to the immigration officer.

Questions Belgian travellers actually ask

Yes. Belgian passport holders are among the many nationalities that can apply for the Cambodia e-visa online at the official portal before flying.

The e-visa portal takes Visa and Mastercard online. A card that only works through Bancontact domestically may not go through, so check your card has an international scheme before applying.

If you stay airside and do not pass through immigration, you do not need a Cambodian visa. If you leave the airport or change terminals through immigration, the usual visa rules apply.

No. Cambodia requires a passport valid for at least 6 months with a blank page. A Belgian national ID card is not accepted.

There are no direct flights from Brussels to Cambodia, so most Belgian travellers connect through another hub. Check your visa and transit country's rules for that stopover separately.

If it's rejected for a poor photo, mismatched details or payment issues, you can correct the problem and reapply. The original fee is not refunded, so check your form and photo carefully before resubmitting.

Yes. The e-Arrival form is a separate free declaration that every traveller, including e-visa holders, must complete online no more than 7 days before landing.

Not currently. Land crossings with Thailand are closed due to an ongoing border dispute. Check the official checkpoint list before planning an overland route.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Belgian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type A

    Two flat pins

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Cambodia, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Same as Belgium — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Cambodia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Cambodia · right-hand traffic — same as Belgium

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, ride-hailing apps and hired cars with a driver are the easiest way to get around Cambodian towns and cities. Roads between provinces can be rough, and self-driving a scooter needs care and caution.

  • Health precautions

Tap water isn't safe to drink; stick to bottled or filtered water. Use mosquito repellent, since dengue is present, and check recommended vaccinations with a travel clinic before you go.

  • Respect local customs

Remove your shoes and hat before entering temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and avoid touching anyone's head. Public displays of affection are frowned on.

Cambodian Riels, cash and cards

Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR).

  • US dollars are everyday cash

Cambodia runs on both US dollars and riel side by side. Larger notes and most prices are quoted in dollars; riel is used mainly for small change.

  • ATMs are easy to find

ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and other towns dispense US dollars and accept most foreign cards, usually for a withdrawal fee. Carry cash for rural areas and land borders.

  • Cards work in cities, cash elsewhere

Hotels, bigger restaurants and shops take cards, but markets, tuk-tuks and small guesthouses expect cash, so keep a stock of small dollar and riel notes.
