The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

A tourist or business ETA lets you enter Sri Lanka twice within 30 days counted from your first arrival. It is not two separate 30-day stays and it does not extend itself once that window and the extra time it allows expire.

Business trip: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30 days, double entry: The standard ETA gives 30 days from your first arrival, with a second entry allowed inside that same 30-day period. The second visit only uses whatever days are left, not a fresh 30 days.

  • Extending your stay: Once in Sri Lanka, you can apply online through the Department of Immigration and Emigration's e-services to extend, up to six months in total from your arrival date.

  • Use the ETA within 3 months of issue: The Department's own guidance says you must enter Sri Lanka within three months of the date your ETA is issued, or it can no longer be used, even though it stays on record for longer.

  • An existing visa blocks a new ETA: If you already hold a valid Sri Lankan residence visa or multiple-entry visa, you cannot get a fresh ETA until that visa expires or is cancelled.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as an Azerbaijani applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page for entry stamps. No scan is needed for the standard online ETA form.

  • Visa, Mastercard or Amex card

Fee charged in US dollars. Use a card enabled for international payments, or have someone else pay for you if it's declined.

  • Onward or return ticket

A confirmed ticket out of Sri Lanka, shown to the immigration officer on arrival.

  • Proof of funds

Evidence you can cover your stay, checked on arrival if asked. Bring a bank statement or cash in a widely accepted currency, not manat.

  • Sri Lanka contact address

The address where you plan to stay, entered on the ETA application form.

Only for some visa types

  • Business purpose evidence

Only if Business ETA applicants only. A letter or documentary proof of the meeting, conference or training you are attending in Sri Lanka.

An ETA must be used within 3 months of issue, so applying earlier risks it expiring first. No fixed deadline exists, but apply with time to fix errors or contact a mission if referred.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, visiting family, medical treatment, or a short business visit under a month?

  2. Will your passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive in Sri Lanka?

  3. Do you already hold a valid Sri Lankan residence visa or multiple-entry visa?

  4. Can you pay online with a Visa, Mastercard or Amex card, yours or someone else's?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure it is valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date and has a blank page for stamps.

  2. 2

    Confirm your fee category

Azerbaijan is not on Sri Lanka's free-ETA list, so check the fee table for your visit category before you apply.

  3. 3

Gather your details and a card

Have your passport details, travel dates, accommodation address, and a Visa, Mastercard or Amex card ready.

On the official portal

  1. 4

    Complete the online form

Apply at eta.gov.lk with your passport and travel details.

  2. 5

    Pay the processing fee

Pay by card in US dollars. If your card is not accepted, a relative, friend or travel agent can pay for you.

  3. 6

    Receive your acknowledgement

You get an acknowledgement as soon as the application is submitted successfully.

After you apply

  1. 7

Get your approval or referral notice

Most applications are approved. A referral means you must contact the nearest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission before travelling.

  2. 8

    Check your status any time

Look up your reference number on the ETA site, or call the 24/7 ETA call centre.

  3. 9

    Show it on arrival

Present your passport, a copy of the approval notice, your return ticket and proof of funds at the immigration counter.

Questions Azerbaijani travellers actually ask

No. Azerbaijan is not among the roughly 40 nationalities, or the Singapore, Seychelles and Maldives reciprocal deals, that get the 30-day tourist ETA free of charge. Azerbaijani citizens pay the standard processing fee for their visit category.

Only Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards are accepted, and payment is taken in US dollars. If your card is not enabled for this, a relative, friend or travel agent can submit and pay the application on your behalf.

You need to contact the nearest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission for further assistance before travelling. The ETA website lists Sri Lanka's overseas missions.

A limited facility lets some travellers get an ETA on arrival at the airport, but it costs more than applying online in advance, and you risk being refused if your application is not approved.

No. Tourist and most business ETAs are applied for online at eta.gov.lk. A mission visit is only needed if you are referred, or if you choose that submission method yourself.

There is no fixed minimum, but your ETA must be used to enter Sri Lanka within three months of the date it is issued. Apply with enough time before your flight to fix mistakes or contact a mission if referred, but not so early that it expires first.

Yes, the standard tourist or business ETA allows double entry, but both visits must fall inside the same 30-day period counted from your first arrival, not two fresh 30-day stays.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Azerbaijani plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type D

    Three round pins · 5 A

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

  • Type M

    Three large pins · 15 A

Type D

Sri Lanka uses type D, G and M sockets and your plugs are type C and F. A C-to-D adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 50 Hz

Against 220 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type D adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

  • Getting around

Tuk-tuks, metered taxis and ride-hailing apps cover cities; trains link Colombo to the hill country and coast; long-distance buses reach most towns.

  • Health precautions

Drink bottled or filtered water, use mosquito repellent against dengue, and check whether a yellow fever certificate applies to your journey before you fly.

  • Dress and temple etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees and remove shoes and hats before entering temples, shrines and other religious sites.

Sri Lankan Rupees, cash and cards

Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

Rs

₼1 ≈ Rs173 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • ATMs are widely available

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and dispense Sri Lankan rupees; check with your home bank about foreign withdrawal fees.

  • Carry cash outside cities

Smaller towns, tuk-tuks and local markets often expect cash, so keep rupees on hand outside hotels and main tourist strips.

  • Cards work in tourist areas

Hotels, larger restaurants and shops in main tourist areas take cards, but a fee or minimum spend sometimes applies.
