The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

On the e-Visa, Spanish citizens can stay in Saudi Arabia for up to 90 days on each visit. The visa itself is valid for multiple entries over one year from the date it is issued.

Tourist E-visa: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Per-visit limit, not total time: The 90 days is the maximum for a single stay. It does not mean 90 days spread across the whole year; each entry is capped at 90 days.

  • Multiple entries allowed: Spanish e-Visa holders can leave and re-enter Saudi Arabia as many times as they like within the one-year validity, as long as each stay stays within the 90-day limit.

  • Passport must outlast the trip: Entry is refused if the Spanish passport has less than 6 months left from the date of arrival, even if the e-Visa itself is still valid.

  • Same passport throughout: The passport used to apply for the e-Visa must be the one presented at the border. A renewed Spanish passport issued after the e-Visa was granted will not match.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Spanish applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Spanish citizens must present the same passport used for the online application at the border.

  • Digital photo

200 x 200 pixels, 5 to 100 KB, plain white background, no other people or objects, face filling 70 to 80 percent of the frame, taken within the last 6 months.

  • Valid email address

Used to create the portal account and to receive the issued e-Visa as an attachment.

  • Payment card

A Spanish debit or credit card that supports online payments in euros usually works at checkout on the official portal, which charges in Saudi riyals.

Only for some visa types

  • Return or onward ticket

Only if Only if applying through a Saudi embassy, for example with a diplomatic passport. Not required from Spanish citizens using the e-Visa, since Spain is on the e-Visa eligible list.
  • Proof of accommodation

Only if Only if applying through a Saudi embassy. Not required from Spanish citizens using the e-Visa.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on an ordinary Spanish passport, not a diplomatic, special or official one?

  2. Is your Spanish passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date?

  3. Is your trip for tourism, leisure, visiting family, or Umrah outside the Hajj season?

  4. Are you 18 or over, or travelling with a guardian aged 18 or over if you are under 18?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure your Spanish passport has at least 6 months left from your planned entry date, and that it is the one you will travel on.

  2. 2

    Prepare your photo and email

Get a digital photo that meets the official specification, and have a working email address ready for the portal account.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create an account

Register on the official Saudi eVisa portal with your email address and verify it.

Spain is on the eVisa eligible list, so Spanish citizens use this route rather than an embassy.

  2. 4

    Fill in the application

Enter your passport and personal details exactly as they appear in your passport, upload your photo, and answer the eligibility questions.

  3. 5

    Pay the government fee

Pay online by card. The portal charges in Saudi riyals and adds VAT at checkout.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Receive the eVisa by email

If approved, the eVisa arrives as an email attachment. Save a printed or digital copy to show on arrival.

  2. 7

    Travel on the same passport

Arrive on the same Spanish passport used in the application. Immigration takes biometric details at entry.

Questions Spanish travellers actually ask

Spain is on Saudi Arabia's e-Visa eligible list, so Spanish citizens can apply online before flying and do not need to visit an embassy for a tourist trip.

Visa on arrival is mainly for travellers holding a valid, already-used US, UK or Schengen visa, or residents of those places. Since Spain is already e-Visa eligible, Spanish citizens normally apply online before travelling rather than on arrival.

Up to 90 days per visit, with multiple entries allowed over the one-year validity of the e-Visa.

You must travel on the same passport you used to apply. A new passport number issued after approval will not match, so apply for the e-Visa only once your passport situation is settled.

Many visitors can hire a car with a valid foreign licence, but rules vary by nationality. Check with the car hire company in Saudi Arabia before travelling with a Spanish licence.

Yes. The tourist e-Visa covers Umrah outside the Hajj season as well as tourism, leisure and visiting family, with no separate application needed for Spanish citizens.

The portal charges in Saudi riyals and takes payment by card at checkout. A Spanish card that supports online international payments should work, but check with your bank before applying.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Spanish plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type G

Saudi Arabia uses type G sockets and your plugs are type C and F. A C-to-G adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 60 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type G adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Saudi Arabia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Saudi Arabia · right-hand traffic — same as Spain

  • Getting around

Riyadh has a metro and bus network; Jeddah and other cities rely on taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem. Car hire is easy and common for trips between cities and to sites like AlUla.

  • Heat and health

Summers are extremely hot, with daytime highs above 40C from May to September. Carry water, limit time outdoors at midday, and use sun protection, especially away from the coast.

  • Dress and etiquette

Modest dress is expected for everyone in public: shoulders and knees covered. Alcohol is illegal. Public life pauses briefly at prayer times, when some shops and restaurants close for a short while.

Saudi Riyals, cash and cards

Saudi Arabia uses the Saudi Riyal (SAR).

SAR

€1 ≈ SAR4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards work almost everywhere

Bank cards and mobile payments are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants in cities, so carrying large amounts of cash is rarely necessary.

  • Keep small notes for cash tips

Riyal notes are still useful for tipping porters, valets and drivers, and for small vendors and traditional markets that prefer cash.

  • ATMs are widely available

Cash machines are common in airports, malls and city centres and accept most international bank cards, but can be scarcer in small towns and rural areas.
