    e-Visa

The Netherlands is on the eVisa list, so most Dutch citizens apply online through the official portal before flying, for tourism, family visits or Umrah outside Hajj season.

  • Used US/UK/Schengen visa

    Visa on arrival

A Dutch traveller who already holds a valid, used US, UK or Schengen visa can instead get a visa at the airport or another entry point on arrival, without applying first.

  • Unaccompanied minors

    Embassy visa

A Dutch minor under 18 cannot get the eVisa without a guardian aged 18 or over applying on their behalf; otherwise an embassy visa is needed.

The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

On an eVisa or visa on arrival, a Dutch traveller may stay up to 90 days per visit, within one year of the visa being issued, with multiple entries allowed. The 90-day limit is per visit, not a total for the whole year.

Tourist E-visa: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 90 days is per visit: Each entry allows up to 90 days. The one-year validity lets a Dutch traveller come and go on separate trips, each capped at 90 days.

  • It is not extendable: The Dutch government's travel advice and general eVisa information do not describe an extension process. Plan the trip to fit inside 90 days.

  • Overstaying brings a fine: Staying past 90 days leads to a fine, and the traveller may not be allowed to leave Saudi Arabia until it is paid. The Dutch embassy cannot pay this fine or ask Saudi authorities to waive it.

  • Hajj and Umrah are separate: The tourist eVisa covers Umrah outside the Hajj season, but not Hajj itself, which needs its own route through the Nusuk platform.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as a Dutch applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. The Dutch government confirms this same rule for Dutch passport holders. Use the same passport to apply and to enter.

  • Digital photo

200 x 200 pixels, 5 to 100 KB, plain white background, face filling 70 to 80 percent of the frame, taken within the last 6 months. No separate Dutch rule applies.

  • Valid email address

Used to create the eVisa account and to receive the issued eVisa as an attachment.

  • Payment card

The online portal takes international card payment; a Dutch-issued debit or credit card works as long as it supports online payments abroad.

Only for some visa types

  • Consent for travel with a minor

Only if Travelling with a child under 18. A Dutch minor travelling with only one parent, or without a parent, needs the Dutch consent form for travel abroad with a minor, plus the child's own passport and eVisa.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, visiting family, business events or Umrah outside Hajj season?

  2. Will your Dutch passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive?

  3. Are you 18 or over, or is a guardian aged 18 or over applying on your behalf?

  4. Are you travelling on an ordinary Dutch passport, not a diplomatic, special or official one?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport validity

Make sure your Dutch passport has at least 6 months left from your entry date, and that you will travel on the same passport you use to apply.

  2. 2

Prepare a compliant photo and email

Take a digital photo matching the official size and background rules, and have an email address ready to register on the portal.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register and verify your account

Create an account on the official Saudi eVisa portal with your email address and verify it.

  2. 4

    Fill in your details

Enter your Dutch passport details and personal information, upload the photo, and answer the eligibility questions.

  3. 5

    Pay online

Pay the government fee by card; a Dutch-issued card that supports online payments abroad should work.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Receive the eVisa by email

If approved, the eVisa arrives as an email attachment. Save a copy, printed or digital, to show at the border.

  2. 7

    Travel on the same passport

Enter Saudi Arabia on the same Dutch passport used in the application. Immigration captures biometrics on arrival.

Questions Dutch travellers actually ask

Yes. The Netherlands is on the list of passports eligible for the online eVisa, so most Dutch travellers can apply before flying instead of visiting an embassy.

Yes, the same rule as most destinations: at least 6 months left from the date you enter Saudi Arabia, confirmed by the Dutch government's own travel advice.

Yes, a Dutch driving licence is accepted in Saudi Arabia, but confirm this with the car hire company before you travel, as practice can vary.

You get a fine and may not be allowed to leave Saudi Arabia until it is paid. The Dutch embassy cannot pay the fine for you or ask the Saudi authorities to cancel it.

Yes. Each child needs their own passport and approved eVisa. If a child travels with only one parent or without a parent, bring the Dutch consent form for travel with a minor.

The portal accepts online card payment. A Dutch debit or credit card that works for international online payments should be accepted, though this is not stated as a Netherlands-specific rule.

General tourist entry does not require proof of insurance, but the Dutch government still recommends a good travel insurance policy that covers hospital treatment and repatriation to the Netherlands.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Dutch plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type G

Saudi Arabia uses type G sockets and your plugs are type C and F. A C-to-G adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 60 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type G adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Saudi Arabia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Saudi Arabia · right-hand traffic — same as Netherlands

  • Getting around

Riyadh has a metro and bus network; Jeddah and other cities rely on taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem. Car hire is easy and common for trips between cities and to sites like AlUla.

  • Heat and health

Summers are extremely hot, with daytime highs above 40C from May to September. Carry water, limit time outdoors at midday, and use sun protection, especially away from the coast.

  • Dress and etiquette

Modest dress is expected for everyone in public: shoulders and knees covered. Alcohol is illegal. Public life pauses briefly at prayer times, when some shops and restaurants close for a short while.

Saudi Riyals, cash and cards

Saudi Arabia uses the Saudi Riyal (SAR).

SAR

€1 ≈ SAR4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards work almost everywhere

Bank cards and mobile payments are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants in cities, so carrying large amounts of cash is rarely necessary.

  • Keep small notes for cash tips

Riyal notes are still useful for tipping porters, valets and drivers, and for small vendors and traditional markets that prefer cash.

  • ATMs are widely available

Cash machines are common in airports, malls and city centres and accept most international bank cards, but can be scarcer in small towns and rural areas.
