Do Belgian citizens need a visa for Saudi Arabia?

Yes, Belgians need a visa, but most tourists can get an eVisa online before flying rather than going to an embassy.

The 90-day rule, and what it does not mean

An eVisa or visa on arrival for tourism lets a Belgian stay up to 90 days on each visit, and the visa itself stays valid for multiple entries over one year from the date it is issued.

Tourist E-visa: 90 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

63 of 90 days

1 Mar – 2 May: 63 of the 90 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 90 days is per visit, not per year: Each entry allows a stay of up to 90 days. The one-year validity lets you come and go on several trips, but no single stay can run past the 90-day mark.

  • Business trips follow different rules: Belgian official travel advice says business travel still goes through the Saudi embassy or consulate, so its stay length and validity are set by that visa, not by the 90-day tourist eVisa rule.

  • It is not a guarantee of entry: Holding a valid eVisa or visa on arrival does not guarantee entry. The immigration officer at the border decides on the day, based on the conditions met on arrival.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Belgian applicant.

  • Passport

Valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry. Use the same Belgian passport for the application and at the border.

  • Digital photo

200 x 200 pixels, 5 to 100 KB, plain white background, no other people or objects, face filling 70 to 80 percent of the frame, taken within the last 6 months. No extra rule for Belgian applicants.

  • Valid email address

Needed to create the eVisa account and to receive the issued visa as an email attachment.

  • Payment card

The government fee is paid online by card at checkout. A standard Belgian debit or credit card that supports online payment in a foreign currency works for this.

Only for some visa types

  • Medical insurance

Only if Certain transit and Umrah routes. Not needed to prove for general tourist entry. Some transit and Umrah routes carry a mandatory medical insurance requirement, so check the route you are using on the official portal.
  • Business invitation or supporting letter

Only if Business travellers, who apply at the embassy rather than online. Belgian official travel advice says business trips are still handled through the Saudi embassy or consulate, which sets its own document list, typically including a company or sponsor letter.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, leisure, visiting family, or Umrah outside the Hajj season?

  2. Is your Belgian passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date?

  3. Are you 18 or over, or travelling with a parent or guardian if you are not?

  4. Do you hold a regular Belgian passport, not a diplomatic, special or official one?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport and photo

Make sure your Belgian passport has at least 6 months left from your entry date, and prepare a digital photo that meets the official specification.

  2. 2

Confirm the eVisa covers your trip

The tourist eVisa is for tourism, family visits and Umrah outside the Hajj season. Business trips still go through the Saudi embassy, per Belgian official travel advice.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Register with your email

Create an account on the official eVisa portal with a valid email address and verify it.

  2. 4

    Enter your Belgian passport details

Fill in your passport and personal details exactly as they appear in your passport, upload your photo, and answer the eligibility questions.

  3. 5

    Pay the government fee online

Pay by card at checkout. A standard Belgian debit or credit card set up for online payments abroad can be used.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Receive the eVisa by email

If approved, the eVisa arrives as an email attachment. Keep a printed or digital copy to show on arrival.

  2. 7

    Travel on the same passport

Arrive in Saudi Arabia on the same Belgian passport used in the application. Immigration captures biometric details on entry.

Questions Belgian travellers actually ask

Not simply by being Belgian. Visa on arrival is for travellers who already hold a valid, used US, UK or Schengen visa, or who are permanent residents of the US, UK, EU or a GCC country. Most Belgian tourists use the eVisa instead.

Yes. Belgian official travel advice says business travel still goes through a Saudi embassy or consulate, not the tourist eVisa used for leisure trips.

Yes, outside the Hajj season. Hajj and Umrah during the Hajj season go through the official Nusuk and Nusuk Umrah platforms instead.

A standard Belgian debit or credit card set up for online foreign currency payments should work at checkout on the official portal, since the fee is charged in Saudi riyals plus VAT.

The destination guide notes that these are not required from citizens of eVisa-eligible countries such as Belgium, though embassy-route applicants, for example for business, are usually asked for them.

General tourist entry does not require proof of insurance. Some transit and Umrah routes do carry a mandatory insurance requirement, so check the route you are using before you fly.

Many visitors can hire a car on a valid foreign or international driving licence, and rules vary by nationality. Belgian official travel advice recommends carrying an international driving permit, so check this with the car hire company before you travel.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Belgian plug won't fit. Here's what will.

  • Type G

    Three flat pins · 13 A

Type G

Saudi Arabia uses type G sockets and your plugs are type C and E. A C-to-G adapter works for the whole trip.

Voltage

230 V · 60 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: one type G adapter and a small power strip — hotel rooms rarely have more than two sockets.

Saudi Arabia drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Saudi Arabia · right-hand traffic — same as Belgium

  • Getting around

Riyadh has a metro and bus network; Jeddah and other cities rely on taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem. Car hire is easy and common for trips between cities and to sites like AlUla.

  • Heat and health

Summers are extremely hot, with daytime highs above 40C from May to September. Carry water, limit time outdoors at midday, and use sun protection, especially away from the coast.

  • Dress and etiquette

Modest dress is expected for everyone in public: shoulders and knees covered. Alcohol is illegal. Public life pauses briefly at prayer times, when some shops and restaurants close for a short while.

Saudi Riyals, cash and cards

Saudi Arabia uses the Saudi Riyal (SAR).

SAR

€1 ≈ SAR4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards work almost everywhere

Bank cards and mobile payments are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants in cities, so carrying large amounts of cash is rarely necessary.

  • Keep small notes for cash tips

Riyal notes are still useful for tipping porters, valets and drivers, and for small vendors and traditional markets that prefer cash.

  • ATMs are widely available

Cash machines are common in airports, malls and city centres and accept most international bank cards, but can be scarcer in small towns and rural areas.
