The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

Your stay is set by the entry permission you hold, and the official Egypt e-Visa Portal is the source for its terms. This page does not state a number of days, because I could not confirm one from an official source.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • e-Visa stay: The e-Visa is a tourist permission for entry to Egypt. Check the length of stay and entry type printed on your approved e-Visa.

  • Extending your stay: Visitors can generally apply to extend their stay at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before the current permission expires.

  • Passport check: Passport validity must be at least 6 months from arrival, with a blank page, or Egypt can refuse entry even with an approved e-Visa.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Do you hold an ordinary Russian passport, not a diplomatic, service or official passport?

  2. Does your passport have at least 6 months left after your arrival date, and a blank page?

  3. Are you applying at least 7 days before you fly?

  4. Is your trip a tourist visit or a business or family visit with a letter ready?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Your passport must be valid at least 6 months from your arrival date and have a blank page for the entry stamp.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page, a passport-style photo, your flight details and your hotel details ready to upload.

For business or family visits, also get a supporting or invitation letter.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create an account

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal with your email address and confirm the registration.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, select the visa type, read the instructions and fill in your personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear in your passport.

Incomplete applications are rejected, and mismatched details can void the application.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online by Visa, Mastercard or another accepted debit or credit card.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Download and print your e-Visa

After approval you get an email. Sign back in to download and print the e-Visa.

  2. 7

    Present it at arrival

Show the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer. Arrive at a listed airport, seaport or land crossing.

Egyptian port authorities can refuse entry even to an approved e-Visa holder.

Questions Russian travellers actually ask

Yes. The Egypt e-Visa Portal lists the Russian Federation among the countries whose nationals can apply online. Apply at least 7 days before you fly.

The official portal says to create your e-Visa application at least 7 days before departure. Apply earlier if you can, so you have time to fix any upload problems.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. It also needs a blank page for the entry stamp.

For business or family visits, a supporting letter is generally needed. This is a letter from your employer or an invitation letter from the person you are visiting. Tourist trips need a hotel booking or stay details and a flight itinerary.

Yes. Download and print the approved e-Visa from your portal account. Show the printed copy with your passport to the immigration officer at your port of entry.

Only at Egypt's designated airports, seaports and land crossings. For air entry, these include Cairo, Alexandria (Borg El Arab), Hurghada, Luxor and Sharm El Sheikh airports. Check the list before you book.

The portal says incomplete applications are rejected, and mismatched details can void the application. Check every field against your passport. If the e-Visa cannot be used, apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before you travel.

Visitors can generally apply to extend their stay at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before the current permission expires. Check with the office nearest where you are staying.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Russian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Same as Russia — phones, laptops and shavers work with only an adapter, no converter.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Egypt drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Egypt · right-hand traffic — same as Russia

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

E£

₽1 ≈ E£0.534 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.

Sweet spot: Cairo has a hot desert climate. Winters (December to February) are mild and dry with cool evenings, spring and autumn are warm, and summer (June to August) is very hot with little rain. Most visitors prefer the cooler months from October to April.
