Norway is on Egypt's official e-Visa eligible list, so most Norwegian travellers apply online through the Egypt e-Visa Portal before they fly, rather than visiting an embassy.

  • Diplomatic or document holders

    Visa at an embassy

Norwegian diplomatic, service or special passport holders, and holders of refugee or other travel documents, cannot use the e-Visa. They apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel.

The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

Egypt's e-Visa lets you stay for a fixed number of days per entry, shown on the approved e-Visa itself. It is not a residence permit and does not reset just because you leave and come back on a single-entry visa.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Single-entry e-Visa: Covers one stay in Egypt. Once you leave, it cannot be used again, even if the day count isn't used up.

  • Multiple-entry e-Visa: Lets you leave and re-enter Egypt more than once within its validity, but each individual stay is still capped at the length shown on the e-Visa.

  • Extensions: If you want to stay longer, apply at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before your current permission runs out. Don't wait until the day it expires.

  • Overstaying: Staying past the date on your e-Visa without an extension can mean fines and problems leaving the country, even though the entry itself was approved.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Norwegian applicant.

  • Passport bio page

Colour scan or photo of the personal details page. Most Norwegian passports are valid for 10 years, but check yours still has at least 6 months left from your arrival date and a blank page.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent photo on a plain white background, head and shoulders visible, no sunglasses. Head coverings only for religious reasons.

  • Travel itinerary

Flight booking or ticket showing your arrival and departure dates.

  • Accommodation details

Hotel booking, or the address of where you're staying, covering the length of your visit.

  • Debit or credit card

A Visa, Mastercard or other accepted card to pay online. The charge is taken in US dollars, so your Norwegian bank may add its own foreign transaction charge.

Only for some visa types

  • Supporting or invitation letter

Only if Business or family visits. A letter from your employer, or an invitation letter from the person or organisation you're visiting in Egypt.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your trip for tourism, or a short business or family visit?

  2. Does your passport have at least 6 months' validity left from your arrival date, with a blank page?

  3. Are you travelling on an ordinary Norwegian passport, not a diplomatic, service or special passport?

  4. Will you arrive at one of Egypt's listed e-Visa airports, seaports or land borders?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

Check your passport meets the rules

Confirm your Norwegian passport has at least 6 months' validity left from your arrival date and a blank page for the entry stamp.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page scan, a digital photo, flight booking, hotel booking and (for business or family trips) a supporting letter ready to upload.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create your account

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal with your email address and confirm the registration.

  2. 4

    Fill in the application

Sign in, select the tourist visa type, and enter your personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear in your Norwegian passport.

A mismatched name or passport number can void the application.

  3. 5

    Pay online

Pay the fee with a Visa, Mastercard or other accepted debit or credit card. The charge is taken in US dollars.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Download your e-Visa

Once approved, you'll get an email. Sign back in to download and print the e-Visa from your account.

  2. 7

    Show it on arrival

Present the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer at one of Egypt's listed airports, seaports or land borders.

Questions Norwegian travellers actually ask

Yes. Norway is on the Egypt e-Visa Portal's official eligible list, so most Norwegian travellers can apply online before flying, instead of visiting an embassy.

No. That free stamp is limited to EU, UK, US and Israeli passport holders for the Sinai Red Sea resorts. Norwegian citizens are not on that list, so the e-Visa (or an embassy visa) is the way in.

Yes, the portal accepts Visa, Mastercard and other major cards. The charge is processed in US dollars, so your Norwegian bank may add its own foreign transaction charge.

Egypt's entry rules ask for a passport valid at least 6 months from arrival with one blank page for the entry stamp. Check both before you travel.

Diplomatic, service and special passport holders cannot use the e-Visa. You need to apply for a visa at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before you travel.

Only if it's on Egypt's list of e-Visa entry points. Arriving somewhere else can mean the e-Visa isn't accepted, so check the list before booking flights.

Apply for an extension at a passport and immigration office before your current permission expires. Overstaying without one can cause fines and problems leaving the country.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Norwegian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.

Sweet spot: Cairo has a hot desert climate. Winters (December to February) are mild and dry with cool evenings, spring and autumn are warm, and summer (June to August) is very hot with little rain. Most visitors prefer the cooler months from October to April.
