The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

Your stay in Egypt depends on the visa type shown on your e-Visa. The official e-Visa Portal does not state a single stay length on the pages I read, so check the length printed on your own e-Visa.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Tourist e-Visa: The portal offers a single-entry and a multiple-entry tourism e-Visa. The stay and validity shown on your approved e-Visa apply. Check them before you book flights.

  • Extending your stay: You can ask for an extension at an Egyptian passport and immigration office before your current permission expires (see the destination guide's FAQ).

  • Staying too long: UK government advice says a visa expired by more than 14 days can bring a fine when you leave. Italian citizens should check Italian government advice, which I could not access.

Your document checklist

Five things to have ready before you start your application, as an Italian applicant.

  • Passport bio page

Clear colour scan or photo of the personal details page. Passport must be valid at least 6 months from your arrival date and have at least one blank page.

  • Recent digital photo

Head and shoulders on a plain white background. No sunglasses. Head coverings only for religious reasons.

  • Flight itinerary

Flight booking or ticket showing your arrival and departure dates.

  • Accommodation details

Hotel booking or the address where you will stay, covering your whole visit.

Only for some visa types

  • Supporting or invitation letter

Only if Business or family visits. Letter from your employer, or an invitation from the person or organisation you are visiting in Egypt.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 5–7 business days. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your passport an ordinary Italian passport, not a diplomatic, service or official one?

  2. Will your passport be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with a blank page?

  3. Will you enter Egypt through an airport, seaport or land crossing on the official list?

  4. Is your trip for tourism, or do you have a supporting letter if it is for business or family?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date and has at least one blank page.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page, a recent digital photo, your flight itinerary and your hotel details ready to upload. Business and family visits also need a supporting letter.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create an account

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal with your email address and confirm your registration.

  2. 4

    Apply for the e-Visa

Sign in, select Apply Now, choose the visa type, read the instructions and fill in your personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear on your passport.

Mismatched names or passport numbers can void the e-Visa.

  3. 5

    Pay online

Pay with a Visa card, Mastercard or another accepted debit card. The fee is shown on the portal.

The portal states the fee is non-refundable.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Wait for approval

You will get an email when the application is approved. Sign in to your account to check the status.

  2. 7

    Print your e-Visa

Download and print the approved e-Visa from your account.

  3. 8

    Show it on arrival

Show the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer at a listed entry point.

Egyptian port authorities can refuse entry even to an approved e-Visa holder.

Questions Italian travellers actually ask

Most Italian citizens need an e-Visa. Italy is on the official Egypt e-Visa Portal list. Apply online before you fly.

Yes. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with at least one blank page.

No. A Sinai-only stamp covers only the Red Sea resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. For other areas you need the e-Visa or another visa.

No. The e-Visa is accepted only at Egypt's designated airports, seaports and land crossings. Check your arrival point before you book.

Business and family visits generally need a supporting or invitation letter. Egyptian authorities can refuse entry without one.

You can apply for an extension at an Egyptian passport and immigration office before your current permission expires. Ask the office nearest where you are staying.

No. Diplomatic, service, special and official passport holders cannot use the e-Visa. Apply at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before you travel.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Italian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

E£

€1 ≈ E£52.4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.

Sweet spot: Cairo has a hot desert climate. Winters (December to February) are mild and dry with cool evenings, spring and autumn are warm, and summer (June to August) is very hot with little rain. Most visitors prefer the cooler months from October to April.
