The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

Hungarian citizens can stay up to 15 days in the Sinai resorts with no visa. Outside Sinai, a tourist visa covers up to one month. A visa is needed for any stay over 15 days in the Sinai resorts.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Sinai resorts, under 15 days: No visa for Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. The stay must stay inside those resorts. An entry fee applies at the Taba border.

  • Tourist visa, up to one month: The Hungarian MFA says a tourist visa covers up to one month. Use the dates on your e-Visa and do not go past them.

  • Longer stays: For a stay over 15 days, or any trip outside the Sinai resorts, you need a visa before you travel. Extensions are asked for at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before your permission expires.

  • Overstaying: You cannot overstay. Penalty fees apply, and the authorities can take further action.

Three questions, 20 seconds

  1. Is your passport a Hungarian passport, valid 6 months after arrival, with a blank page?

  2. Is your trip for tourism, not work or study?

  3. Will you stay only in Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, for under 15 days?

Result

Answer all three

Three quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure it is valid 6 months from arrival and has a blank page. The Hungarian MFA asks for 6 months beyond your return date, so check both.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page, a passport-style photo, your flight itinerary and accommodation details ready to upload.

Add an invitation or employer letter for business or family visits.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create an account

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal with your email address and confirm the registration.

Use only visa2egypt.gov.eg. Similar-looking sites are not official.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, select Apply Now and the visa type, then fill in the form. Enter names and numbers exactly as in your passport. Do not use accents.

  3. 5

    Pay by card

Pay online with a Visa, Mastercard or other accepted debit or credit card.

The official portal states the fee is non-refundable.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Download and print

Once approved by email, sign in and download your e-Visa. Print it.

  2. 7

    Present at the border

Show the printed e-Visa and passport to the immigration officer. Enter only at a listed airport, seaport or land crossing, such as Cairo, Hurghada, Luxor, Sharm El Sheikh or Taba.

The port authority can refuse entry without a reason.

Questions Hungarian travellers actually ask

No, for stays under 15 days in Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. An entry fee applies at the Taba border, paid in US dollars cash according to the Hungarian MFA.

No. It covers only the Sinai resorts. For other places in Egypt, you need a visa before you travel.

No. The Hungarian MFA says ID cards, temporary passports and expired documents are not accepted. Use a valid passport.

The Hungarian MFA says at least 7 days before travel for the online tourist visa. Embassy visas for non-tourist trips need at least 15 days.

The official Egypt e-Visa Portal says 6 months from arrival. The Hungarian MFA says 6 months beyond the return date. Check both and meet the longer period.

Not on the card-format licence alone. The Hungarian MFA says an international driving permit is required, and it advises checking with the rental company.

Yes, you can ask at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before your permission expires. You cannot overstay.

No. Only the listed airports, seaports and land crossings accept e-Visas. Check your entry point before you book.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Hungarian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Egypt drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Egypt · right-hand traffic — same as Hungary

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.

Sweet spot: Cairo has a hot desert climate. Winters (December to February) are mild and dry with cool evenings, spring and autumn are warm, and summer (June to August) is very hot with little rain. Most visitors prefer the cooler months from October to April.
