Three routes into Egypt

  • Most people

    e-Visa

Danish citizens are on Egypt's e-Visa eligible list. Apply online through the official Egypt e-Visa Portal before you fly, for a single or multiple entry tourism e-Visa.

  • Red Sea resorts only

    Sinai-only entry stamp

Danish citizens can get a free stamp on arrival limited to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. It does not cover travel to the rest of Egypt, including Cairo or Luxor.

  • Refugee/alien passport

    Embassy visa

Holders of a Danish refugee passport (flygtningepas) or alien's passport (fremmedpas) are not eligible for the e-Visa and must apply at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel.

Which Danish passport are you holding?

Denmark issues more than one kind of passport. Egypt treats them differently, so check which one you are travelling on.

  • Ordinary Danish passport

    e-Visa eligible

Use this for the e-Visa application, as long as it has at least 6 months' validity left from your arrival date.

  • Forlænget pas (extended passport)

    Exit only

The Danish Foreign Ministry says Egypt recognises an extended Danish passport only for leaving the country, not for entry. Travel on a passport with standard validity instead.

  • Nødpas (emergency passport)

    Exit only

Egypt recognises a Danish emergency passport only for exit, and requires an exit stamp. Do not rely on it to enter Egypt; arrange a full passport first if possible.

  • Flygtningepas / fremmedpas (refugee or alien's passport)

    Not eligible for e-Visa

These travel documents are excluded from the e-Visa. Contact the Egyptian embassy before travelling, since different rules apply.

The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

The Danish Foreign Ministry says Egypt's visa lets you stay up to 30 days per entry. It does not mean you can stay longer by leaving and coming straight back on the same visa.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • 30-day limit: Both the single-entry and multiple-entry tourism e-Visa allow a stay of up to 30 days each time you enter Egypt.

  • Multiple entries, same limit: A multiple-entry e-Visa lets you leave and re-enter Egypt more than once, but each stay still has to fit inside the 30-day limit.

  • Sinai-only stamp is separate: The free Sinai entry stamp only covers the Red Sea resorts of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba. It is a different permission from the e-Visa, and does not let you travel on to the rest of Egypt.

  • Extending your stay: If you need longer, apply at a passport and immigration office inside Egypt before your current permission runs out, not after.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Danish applicant.

  • Passport bio page

Colour scan of the personal details page. Needs 6 months' validity from arrival and a blank page. Use an ordinary passport: extended or emergency Danish passports are recognised only for exit.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent photo on a plain white background, head and shoulders visible, no sunglasses.

  • Travel itinerary

Flight booking or ticket showing arrival and departure dates.

  • Accommodation details

Hotel booking or the address of where you are staying, covering your whole visit.

  • Payment card

A debit or credit card accepted on the official portal, such as Visa or Mastercard, to pay the e-Visa fee online.

Only for some visa types

  • Supporting or invitation letter

Only if Business or family visits. A letter from your employer for business trips, or an invitation letter from the person or organisation you are visiting in Egypt.

When should you apply?

Processing takes 5–7 business days. Enter your arrival date and we'll work backwards.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on an ordinary Danish passport, valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date?

  2. Will you fly or sail into one of Egypt's listed e-Visa airports or seaports?

  3. Is your trip for tourism, and no longer than 30 days per entry?

  4. Do you hold a flygtningepas or fremmedpas (refugee or alien's passport) rather than an ordinary Danish passport?

Result

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your Danish passport

Make sure it is an ordinary passport, not an extended or emergency one, with at least 6 months' validity and a blank page.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page, a digital photo, flight and accommodation details ready to upload.

On the official portal

  1. 3

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal

Create an account with your email address and confirm the registration.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, choose single or multiple entry tourism e-Visa, and fill in your personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear in your passport.

A mismatched name or number can void the application.

  3. 5

    Pay online

Pay the fee with a Visa, Mastercard or other accepted card.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Download your e-Visa

Once approved by email, sign back in to download and print it.

  2. 7

    Show it on arrival

Present the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer at your port of entry.

Keep it with you for the length of your stay, in case it is checked again.

Questions Danish travellers actually ask

Danish citizens are on Egypt's e-Visa list, so the official route is to apply online before flying. A free Sinai-only stamp is also given on arrival at certain Red Sea resort crossings, but it only covers Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba.

The Danish Foreign Ministry says the visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. This applies whether you hold a single or multiple entry e-Visa.

No. The Danish Foreign Ministry says Egypt only recognises an extended Danish passport for leaving the country, not for entering. Travel on an ordinary passport instead.

The same applies: Egypt recognises a Danish emergency passport only on exit, and asks for an exit stamp. It is not a safe document to enter Egypt on.

No. Egypt's e-Visa excludes refugee, Nansen and alien's passport holders. Contact the Egyptian embassy before you travel to find out what applies to you.

The official portal sets no fixed earliest date, but the Danish Foreign Ministry cites processing of about 7 days. Applying at least two weeks ahead leaves time to fix a rejected upload.

You need at least one blank page for the entry stamp, on top of the 6 months' validity Egypt requires from your arrival date.

No. The Sinai-only stamp covers Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba only. For Cairo, Luxor or anywhere else in Egypt, you need the e-Visa or a regular visa.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Danish plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C and F sockets are used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C and F plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

Egypt drives on the right — just like home

Compare traffic side:

Egypt · right-hand traffic — same as Denmark

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.
