Most Canadian travellers
Canada is on Egypt's e-Visa eligible list. Apply online on the official Egypt e-Visa Portal before you fly, then print the approval to show at the border.
Diplomatic & special passports
Canadian diplomatic, special or official passport holders can't use the e-Visa. They apply for a visa in person at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel.
Canada issues a regular passport to most citizens, plus diplomatic and special passports for officials. Egypt's e-Visa portal treats these differently.
Regular Canadian passport
e-Visa eligibleHolders can apply for Egypt's e-Visa online before travelling, provided it has at least 6 months' validity and a blank page.
Diplomatic, special or official passport
Not eligibleThe e-Visa portal does not accept this passport type. Apply for a visa in person at an Egyptian embassy or consulate before travel.

An approved e-Visa must be used to enter within a set window, then it allows a limited stay per visit. A single entry e-Visa covers one trip in; a multiple entry e-Visa covers several trips over a longer period.
Tourist: 30 days per visit.

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.
Typical tourist stay: Global Affairs Canada notes Egypt's tourist visa allows a 30-day stay per visit. Egypt's own e-Visa portal doesn't repeat this figure, so always check the dates shown on your approved e-Visa.
Single entry vs multiple entry: A single entry e-Visa covers one trip into Egypt. A multiple entry e-Visa lets you leave and come back more than once; confirm its dates before booking side trips, for example to Jordan.
Overstaying: Global Affairs Canada warns that staying past your permitted date without authorisation brings fines when you leave Egypt.
Extending in Egypt: If you need more time, visit a passport and immigration office in Egypt before your current permission runs out. Don't wait for the e-Visa to expire first.
Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Canadian applicant.
Colour scan of your Canadian passport's photo page. Valid at least 6 months from your arrival date, with a blank page for the entry stamp.
Plain white background, head and shoulders visible, no sunglasses. No different size is stated for Canadian applicants.
Flight booking or ticket showing your arrival and departure dates.
Hotel booking, or the address of where you're staying, covering the whole length of your visit.
A Visa, Mastercard or other accepted card for online payment. The charge is made in US dollars, so a Canadian card may add its own foreign transaction fee.

Do you hold a regular Canadian passport, not a diplomatic, special or official one?
Will your passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive in Egypt, with a blank page?
Are you flying into, or crossing at, one of Egypt's listed e-Visa airports, seaports or land borders?
Is your trip for tourism, business or a family visit, rather than official or diplomatic duty?

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.
Before you apply
Check your passport and eligibility

Show it at the border
Present the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer at your port of entry.

Egypt uses type C and F sockets and your plugs are type A and B. A A-to-C adapter works for the whole trip.

Against 120 V · 60 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Getting around
Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.
Health and water
Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.
Dress and etiquette
Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.
Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).
$1 ≈ E£35.4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old
Cards and ATMs
ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.
Carry small notes
Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.
Exchange sensibly
Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.
