The 30-day rule, and what it does not mean

The Egypt e-Visa comes as a single-entry or a multiple-entry tourism visa. The official portal sets the length of stay for the type you choose when you apply, so check this on the application form before you pay.

Tourist: 30 days per visit.

Arrive 1 March

21 of 30 days

1 Mar – 21 Mar: 21 of the 30 days this visa allows in one visit.

  • Single entry: Covers one arrival and one stay in Egypt. If you leave and want to come back, you need a new e-Visa or another entry document.

  • Multiple entries: Lets you enter and leave Egypt more than once while it is valid. It does not extend how long you can stay on any single visit.

  • Sinai-only stamp does not count: The free Sinai stamp available to Belgian passport holders is a separate entry permission, not a tourism e-Visa, and only covers the Red Sea resorts.

  • Extending your stay: If you want to stay longer than your e-Visa allows, apply at a passport and immigration office in Egypt before it expires, not after.

Your document checklist

Six things to have ready before you start your application, as a Belgian applicant.

  • Passport bio page

Colour scan of the personal details page. Valid at least 6 months from arrival with at least 1 blank page. Belgium recommends keeping 2 blank pages free for travel outside the EU.

  • Passport-style photo

Recent photo on a plain white background, head and shoulders visible, no sunglasses. A Belgian ID-style photo works.

  • Travel itinerary

Flight booking showing arrival and departure dates, matching the name on your Belgian passport exactly.

  • Accommodation details

Hotel booking, or the address of where you're staying, covering the length of your visit.

  • Visa or Mastercard

The portal accepts Visa, Mastercard and other debit or credit cards. Belgian EUR cards work; your bank converts the dollar amount charged.

Only for some visa types

  • Supporting or invitation letter

Only if Business or family visits. A letter from your employer, or an invitation letter from the person or organisation you're visiting in Egypt.

Four questions, 20 seconds

  1. Are you travelling on an ordinary Belgian passport, not a diplomatic, service or special passport?

  2. Will your passport still be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive in Egypt, with a blank page free?

  3. Are you arriving at one of Egypt's listed e-Visa airports, seaports or land borders?

  4. Is your trip only to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba?

Answer all four

Four quick checks of the rules that most often catch travellers out, and we'll tell you where you stand.

The application, step by step

Before you apply

  1. 1

    Check your passport

Make sure your Belgian passport has at least 6 months of validity left from your arrival date and a blank page. Belgian guidance recommends keeping 2 pages free for trips outside the EU.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Have your passport bio page, a digital photo, your flight itinerary and accommodation details ready to upload, plus a supporting letter if you're travelling for business or a family visit.

On the official portal

  1. 3

    Create an account

Register on the Egypt e-Visa Portal with your email address and confirm the registration.

  2. 4

    Complete the application

Sign in, select the visa type, and fill in your personal, passport and travel details exactly as they appear on your Belgian passport.

  3. 5

    Pay the fee

Pay online with a Visa, Mastercard or other accepted card. Belgian EUR cards work; your bank converts the dollar charge.

After you apply

  1. 6

    Download your e-Visa

Once approved, you'll get an email. Sign back in to download and print the e-Visa from your account.

  2. 7

    Present it on arrival

Show the printed e-Visa with your passport to the immigration officer at your port of entry in Egypt.

Questions Belgian travellers actually ask

Yes. Belgium is on Egypt's official e-Visa list, so most Belgian travellers can apply online through the Egypt e-Visa Portal before flying, instead of visiting an embassy.

Egypt asks for at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Belgian authorities recommend keeping at least two blank pages free for any trip outside the EU, so check this before you travel.

Yes. The official portal accepts Visa, Mastercard and other debit or credit cards. The charge is in US dollars, so your Belgian bank converts the amount at its own rate.

Belgian passport holders can get a free Sinai-only entry stamp on arrival for Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba. It does not let you travel to Cairo, Luxor or the rest of Egypt, so you'd need the e-Visa for that instead.

The official portal says to submit your application at least 7 days before departure. Applying further ahead leaves time to fix and resubmit if a document is rejected.

Children travelling on their own Belgian passport need their own e-Visa application, with the same passport validity and blank page rules as adults.

Egyptian border rules can refuse entry without the full 6 months' validity from your arrival date, even with an approved e-Visa. Renew your passport before applying.

No. Egypt's e-Visa and entry rules are based on your passport, not your Belgian eID. You need a valid passport to apply and to enter Egypt.

The things that make the first 48 hours easy, compared with home

Your Belgian plug fits. Here's what to expect.

  • Type C

    Two round pins · 2.5 A

  • Type F

    Two round pins · 16 A

Type C

Type C is used both at home and in Egypt, so your own plugs fit — though you may meet the other types too.

Voltage

220 V · 50 Hz

Against 230 V · 50 Hz at home. Check the label on chargers and appliances: anything marked 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz works in both.

Pack: nothing special — your type C plugs go straight in. A small power strip is still handy where hotel rooms have one socket.

  • Getting around

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are linked by domestic flights, sleeper and day trains, and Nile cruises. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are widely used and generally more reliable than hailing a taxi on the street.

  • Health and water

Drink bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and carry sun protection and rehydration salts, especially outside the Cairo winter. Discuss standard travel vaccinations with a doctor before you go.

  • Dress and etiquette

Dress modestly at mosques, churches and other religious sites, covering shoulders and knees. Ask before photographing people, and avoid photographing military or police sites.

Egyptian Pounds, cash and cards

Egypt uses the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

E£

€1 ≈ E£52.4 · indicative mid-market rate, possibly a few days old

  • Cards and ATMs

ATMs are common in cities and tourist areas and mostly accept international cards. Hotels, larger shops and restaurants take cards, but smaller vendors, taxis and markets usually want cash.

  • Carry small notes

Keep a supply of small EGP notes for tipping (locally called baksheesh), taxis, and small purchases, since change can be hard to come by.

  • Exchange sensibly

Exchange money at banks, official exchange bureaus or your hotel rather than with street changers, and keep some exchange receipts if you plan to convert leftover cash back on departure.

Sweet spot: Cairo has a hot desert climate. Winters (December to February) are mild and dry with cool evenings, spring and autumn are warm, and summer (June to August) is very hot with little rain. Most visitors prefer the cooler months from October to April.
